Accepting this might be a dumb question..

I have a home project to create two chambers that can be individually heated. I'm thinking to take apart an extension lead, cut the copper line between the live pins in the plug socket, leaving earth and neutral alone. I'd then splice the live wire between a few relays and then back to the extension lead (relays connected to an arduino that will control which socket gets turned on).

Am I creating a monster that will burn my house down..?

Why not just use 4x unswitched single sockets with pattress boxes mounted to a board and house the relays in an adaptable box on the same board. Sounds like less hassle to me.

You can buy ready made sockets to do what you say, around £32 so not cheap, however not that expensive either, same cost for a double socket that will do the same, as to what IFTTT apps are available not sure, but at least your sure it will take the power.
