FAQs : CALLING ALL GAS FITTERS

Great post, Slugbaby! I could argue with a few details too, but in general it's a good summary of the situation. I'd like to add a point about pricing that I think explains a lot about the way things have been going. In the old days when there wasn't much to go wrong with boilers and parts...

distance flue to edge of brickwork

I don't see how manufacturers can give different figures for the necessary clearance from a 100+mm hole to the edge of a structural opening. A hole is a hole, irrespective of what make of flue you stick though it, and there can only be one valid figure for the clearance. I think some of you...

distance flue to edge of brickwork

I don't think that can be right. The actual ventilation opening might be say 1000mm away. What possible risk could there be in such a case, providing that the flue hole is at least 150mm from the reveal of the structural opening?

    Domestic Hot Water Pipe Size

If you're sticking with a combi system for the foreseeable future then there is no point in having pipework above 15mm size. In fact having any 22mm will increase the amount of cold water that has to be drawn off before the hot comes through and will leave more hot water in the pipes afterwards...

distance flue to edge of brickwork

The hole for the flue should not be closer than 150mm to any structural opening in the building fabric because it could seriously weaken the structure, as illustrated by the pic above. Structural openings are not the same as ventilation openings! A structural opening may contain a window...

Adding Radiator to existing radiator with 10mm pipe

You could upgrade the drops from the floor above to 15mm without actually going into the floor. Just connect new 15mm pipes to the 10mm pipes poking down through the ceiling. Although this will leave short sections of 10mm in the run, the flow resistance from these will be greatly reduced (in...

Quick Question - Extractor Fan Noise After Boiler Service?

Agree with that comment. The Britony lugs are so small it's easy to miss them, and it won't be obvious that the cover isn't fitted properly. But in this case the difference in fan noise resulting from the incorrectly fitted cover seems to have been obvious enough.

Quick Question - Extractor Fan Noise After Boiler Service?

Well done scatmanjohn. Shame on the so-called engineer who didn't fit it properly. Just goes to show how risky it is getting someone to service a boiler, thanks to Corgi incompetence.

i need some copper tee's without a shoulder

So what was wrong with Tony's very sensible suggestion that you use a normal tee and a slip straight connector (or two) in series?

3 TEE Rule and reverse Circulation in Multi Zone layout

How can you get reverse circulation? If zone valve is open you will get normal circulation through that circuit, if it's closed you won't get any circulation, reverse or otherwise.

    Cannot Precharge Expansion Vessel

Or a leaky diaphragm. It's easy to check if either is leaking - just immerse the valve or the threaded pipe connection in water and watch for bubbles while it is still pressurised.

    Plumbing fault kills child

You're right. I'm assuming it was a similar scenario. Possum-jenkins said that the tank wasn't properly supported too. Anyway it all goes to show that it's foolish to comment without first getting your facts right.

    Plumbing fault kills child

I'm assuming that the tank wasn't supported by a level, continuous base as it should be. Perhaps it was resting on a couple of battens. That makes a lot of difference to how the tank behaves when full of very hot water.

    Girl 9 Dies after explosion

What rule has changed and what does it now say?
  15. C

    Plumbing fault kills child

The plastic water tank wouldn't "melt" at 100°C, but would soften. The real fault was that the tank wasn't properly supported which could result in a distortion of it's shape when softened and spillage of very hot water. So are those responsible for the shoddy tank installation going to be held...

fibre washers - how long do they last?

Fibre washers are fine, good for 25 years if installed properly and left undisturbed.

Yes, there's a label on the underside to confirm it.

Be glad that you have nothing more important to worry about.

Shower mixer cold water feed back? Help and advice required

Turn off the cold inlet valve, which is just to right of gas connection in the middle. By the way, which clown installed that boiler? What a mess he made of the pipework.

Shower mixer cold water feed back? Help and advice required

Turn off hot supply from combi. Does any water continue to flow out of hot taps? If so this is cr5ossing over through the shower valve (or other mixing valve). There should be check valves built into the shower valve to stop this, but the hot inlet one may have failed.
