    Lighting puzzle

Eric - I reckon that the OP might have just wanted to do a thought experiment so asked for us to rule out relays and Wifi/Bluetooth sort of IT completely

    Lighting puzzle

Well a very interesting problem. I did take a look at it a couple of days ago but I was away from home and had no paper so a quick thought mentally was all I could manage. Only a couple of side-tracks too, so well done. Unfortunately now I'm back I cant get my printer to work, I was going to...

reconnecting the electric from a demolished building

You might find one with the old type coin meter so you could try putting a few shillings or thrupence's or silver sixpences in but if successful you`d likely only be able to draw off units per horsepower not watts or kilowatts so like Morq said not very useful with todays equipment. Ask the DNO...

I'm confused about junction box rules

Might it be the (r1 + r2)/4 = R1 + R2, perhaps ? and yes I would like to know where the 1/8 idea actually stems from, even as a quick approximation.

I'm confused about junction box rules

Sorry John my bad, not 8Bm but 1/8 as a %age , still dont follow it though and yes some people do insist that the 2m rule does apply from the point or JB on the ring to the spur itself .

I'm confused about junction box rules

The only thing I have noticed of that one John is "Must be no longer than 2 metres" which perhaps shows a little thinking about it should not be too long but a complete misunderstanding of the Two Metre Rule itself As for the 8 metre idea, then I have no idea where it originates unless as a...

I'm confused about junction box rules

Very interesting Securespark and pretty much as what I thought. What was the idea about half the number of points or even no more spurs than on the ring itself? I`ve never been totally convinced about any reasoning other than encouraging neatness thereby robustness or to avoid encouraging spurs...

I'm confused about junction box rules

A good approximation to start with is A/ loads divided equally fairly equally around to ring and avoiding unequal loading of the two legs. or B/ Most loading centred around the midpoint - the middle one thiird of the ring length would usually be considerd acceptable or C/ Combining A/ and B/...

I'm confused about junction box rules

I'm not sure what sort of wriggling that is meant to represent, but I use wording fairly loosely and on the occasion the reason for the 'bad practice' is that it represented 'a breach of the regulations'. The most powerful reg in the book is ??? Hint - around about reg no Regulation 421.1 as...

Electric shower wiring, does this look ok?

I am glad that you posted this picture of this first attempt my friend ;) I`m glad that, apparently, a number of people put a fridge or freezer in a confined space 9such as the pantry under the stairs and leave the door open hoping it will cool the room only to find that actually it heats the...

I'm confused about junction box rules

Yes but it was found, in practice, that some of them got changed to twins, therefore 3 or 4 outlets possible from one if the initial 2 x single socket was a one spur in the first place, so another rule was added/amended to reduce that risk.

Electric shower wiring, does this look ok?

Yes, it was just a warming of the water needed and 7 to 10Kw would have been too hot and expensive to run so I thought "hey perhaps two elements in series for quarter power and the testing went from there really, thats when I noticed some differences and maybe more than production line...

Electric shower wiring, does this look ok?

Yes good point, but I tink that sometimes they are not equal, perhaps intentionally and probably not always. Obviously we can only measure then cold and once warmed up that will vary but it gives us an initial rough idea. Perhaps they are designed to be based on a logarithmic sort of difference...

Electric shower wiring, does this look ok?

Does the 10KW have three elements whereas the 7KW has two elements though?, I know that some used that little trick.

Yes indeed and they in turn had some ingenuity too. Clever stuff in their own day.

Old House Mystery: 6-Bell Servants’ Call Box – 2 Still Missing, Any Ideas?

Nowadays rather than a simple say 5 wire or 6 wire device (plus using the earth as a return perhaps) you'd probably more likely to use say discreet LEDs and a constant current source as the basis for a replacement if you are into DIY Electronics or more than likely use or modify use of existing...
