CH Tripping Electric - Faulty 3-Port Valve?

Thanks everyone. I will call on Monday and try and get it sorted before the cold weather starts creeping in again - they had to special order the valve last time :D

CH Tripping Electric - Faulty 3-Port Valve?

RCD/MCB? It tripped the switch in the fuse box which turned ALL the sockets in the house off but left the lights working. We have been using DHW pretty much every day for hot water, but not using the CH since it warmed up. I have the DHW on now in fact and all is well.

CH Tripping Electric - Faulty 3-Port Valve?

A couple of weeks ago we had the CH on to dry some clothes and the electricity in the house tripped. Didn't think anything of it and put it back on. No problems. Today it was raining, and I needed to dry some stuff I didn't want to put though the tumble dryer, so I put the heating on again...

Thank you everyone. I will stop worrying then.

    Frost Protection Question

Boiler is a Potterton (can't recall the model). It is located on the kitchen wall (an outside wall but the wall is quite shielded where it is due to fence/shed etc.), the hot water tank is in the airing cupboard upstairs, and the stat is at the bottom of the stairs.

    Frost Protection Question

My central heating system doesn't have a built in frost protection system. Last winter, we simply put the heating on constant and at night or when we went out turned the stat down to about 10C so it would come on if it got really cold to prevent frost. This winter however, we have decided...

Hot Water but No Central Heating

Thank you. I am learning a lot. This all meant nothing to me before this problem, but I know understand a lot more about how everything works. Could never attempt to work on it myself (for that I will let an expert take over) but at least I know what I am talking about.

Hot Water but No Central Heating

Again, a little unrelated, but I have learned a lot here so I thought I'd ask to widen my knowledge. On my system there are two sliders on the programmer - one for CH and one for DHW. In for instance, I slide the CH slider to ON (or the timer puts it on), what happens netx? I assume it...

Hot Water but No Central Heating

Tried the CH this morning WITHOUT DHW and the system works just fine. Just as it did before the fault! Guess whatever is broken has started working again!!

Hot Water but No Central Heating

I know the diagnosis is pretty certain, and my plumber agrees and has ordered the replacement part, but here's something else I noticed. Did some more checking today, and when you turn heating on and create demand (turn the stat up) you can hear the valve open, but as expected, the boiler...

Hot Water but No Central Heating

That makes perfect sense. I kind of suspected something of that nature but really had no clue :D Thank you

Hot Water but No Central Heating

Thank you. I have relayed these musings to the plumber on the phone and he is in agreement that the valve/microswitch sounds like the problem, so has taken the model number and is getting hold of one befoe he pays me a visit so if that is the problem once he has had a look he will at least...

Hot Water but No Central Heating

Thank you for the reply. We noticed back in January when the programmer physically broke, that if we turned on CH (nothing happened because the slide switch was broken, but we could 'wiggle' the slider to make enough of a connection to get the lights on this valve to turn on), and then also...

Hot Water but No Central Heating

OK, landlord called, and plumber booked. Not until next week though (at least it's not too cold at the moment). Still would appreciate any advice on the above.

Hot Water but No Central Heating

Yes, the little box was exactly like that. And no, turning the stat up made no difference at all, other than it went click when it passed the 'current' temp. All we got was the light on the 'little box' and the light on the programmer indicating we had switched it on. Turning the stat...

Hot Water but No Central Heating

For reference the boiler is a condensing Potterton Promax HE (with Potterton thermostat and programmer). System is about 3-4 years old and was put in by the house builders I assume. I also know VERY little about how central heating/boilers etc. work. The last week or so we have been using...

    Creaking Bath

:D A bathful of water must come in at 200kg or so I would have thought. That's heavy in my book!

    Creaking Bath

Our bath has always had a slight creak to it when moving around showering. However, we had some damaged sealant on the edge which I replaced, and so as not to get it too wet for a few days I have been standing at the opposite end of the bath to shower than I normally do for the last couple of...

    Sealing a Bath

Good idea about the plastic bags. I think I will tape some black bags on to the tiles before bed tonight, and then when we shower in the morning it will at least minimise the water that goes on the half-cured sealant.
