Thanks everyone. I will call on Monday and try and get it sorted before the cold weather starts creeping in again - they had to special order the valve last time :D

RCD/MCB? It tripped the switch in the fuse box which turned ALL the sockets in the house off but left the lights working. We have been using DHW pretty much every day for hot water, but not using the CH since it warmed up. I have the DHW on now in fact and all is well.

A couple of weeks ago we had the CH on to dry some clothes and the electricity in the house tripped. Didn't think anything of it and put it back on. No problems. Today it was raining, and I needed to dry some stuff I didn't want to put though the tumble dryer, so I put the heating on again...

Boiler is a Potterton (can't recall the model). It is located on the kitchen wall (an outside wall but the wall is quite shielded where it is due to fence/shed etc.), the hot water tank is in the airing cupboard upstairs, and the stat is at the bottom of the stairs.

Again, a little unrelated, but I have learned a lot here so I thought I'd ask to widen my knowledge. On my system there are two sliders on the programmer - one for CH and one for DHW. In for instance, I slide the CH slider to ON (or the timer puts it on), what happens netx? I assume it...

Tried the CH this morning WITHOUT DHW and the system works just fine. Just as it did before the fault! Guess whatever is broken has started working again!!

Thank you. I have relayed these musings to the plumber on the phone and he is in agreement that the valve/microswitch sounds like the problem, so has taken the model number and is getting hold of one befoe he pays me a visit so if that is the problem once he has had a look he will at least...

Thank you for the reply. We noticed back in January when the programmer physically broke, that if we turned on CH (nothing happened because the slide switch was broken, but we could 'wiggle' the slider to make enough of a connection to get the lights on this valve to turn on), and then also...

Good idea about the plastic bags. I think I will tape some black bags on to the tiles before bed tonight, and then when we shower in the morning it will at least minimise the water that goes on the half-cured sealant.
