    Render / screed estimator

The forum sticky for the calculator is down. Need to cast a hearth. (62cm×35cm) + (86cm x 32cm) = 4,922 cm squared * 6.1 cm deep = 30,042 cm cubed Can someone translate this into KG bags of cement and sand and a ratio? I'll tile on top. Many thanks

    Paint stripping

Modern paint strippers aren't as good as they used to be, as the dcm has been removed. You can still get it. I used this: https://paintman.co.uk/shop/paint-stripper-strip-away-pro-professional-users-only/ I signed the email form saying I was a sole trader and it was delivered. Read the...

    Wet joist

Here the same on a joist under where the old hot water tank was. This is middle of the house away from any external wall and bine dry. Old owner told me about the leak from the hot water tank taking down the ceiling in the 60's. Found the evidence during some renovation. I reckon yours is...

Inner Wall Removal - Making good for plastering

I'd use hammer and bolster, or an old/cheap chisel at a pinch. Just don't expect to ever use it again on wood. Those blocks are easy to trim down Cutting disc is too messy and awkward

Bone dry under my floor, why??

Mine is also bone dry. I attributed it to airflow - the cobwebs flutter horizontally with the breeze. Its like a massive dehydrator. There's a visible slate dpc and early cavity wall (1920s) detached, and enough airbricks to make a surprisingly marked airflow. Varying pressure differential...

Boil water then cook on gas?

Yeah, but when cooking on gas I keep the extractor on, especially when boiling water. Where does that heat go? Either way, kettle for convenience for me. Who cares about efficiency

    Mini cooper light cable connector

2016 mini cooper petrol 1.6 Wife forced into a flooded road a while ago and the rear offside light cluster (brake, indicator and reverse lights) stopped working. Took the assembly out and it was soaked. Dried it all off and it works. Now it intermittently stops working. Took a look and the...

    Reverse flow from soakaway

My soakaway silted up. Was about 1.5k quoted to dig out and repair. Called Water Co and asked if I could redirect the downpipes to the sewer and pay surface water charge instead. This is how most of the neighbours are setup. Water Co agreed. I was surprised. Maybe do similar, if logicistics permit?

    Shower waist size

Thinking laterally, if the width only permits 32mm due to steel, and the drainage is inadequate, would 2x 32mm do the job?

Boil water then cook on gas?

I boil kettle then decant onto gas hob. For convenience. Some interesting stuff here https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/boiling-water.509334/ Without measuring, I reckon cheaper to kettle and decant, especially when boiling a few litres for pasta. Kettle is more efficient at getting the energy...

Damp Problem - Who to Approach

Aww man this is tricky. If just the front, and fairly recent I'd be looking for broken / overflowing gutters saturating the brick, or drains out front. I guess the good sign is this is recent, then it's not a long standing fundamental issue with a near 150yr old basement with solid walls...

Damp Problem - Who to Approach

Minefield. Also a diy. Many causes of "damp" Are you below ground? Top floor? Is it condensation - warm moist air getting behind the plasterboard and condensing on the cool bricks? Was the plasterboard put in to mask the damp? How long have you lived there? What's on the other side of the...
