Is there a particular weave of carpet I should use or will a standard Saxony do?

    Erection of steel goal post

Well, the first attempt failed! It started out ok as I gashed together a crane from a scaffolding tower, acrow prop and rope attached to the house. However, the good ideas club kicked in and I decided to pull it up majestically into place from the opposite direction suggested above. A silly...

    Erection of steel goal post

I've just watched a series of videos on how the Amish raise a barn. Incredible. I'm thinking of converting. Although the lack of beer, internet and fast cars might be a slight issue.

    Erection of steel goal post

Heavy duty brooms I assume? ;) The Structural Engineer has specified each baseplate for the columns to be fixed by 4 M12 bolts in resin. Any suggestions as to how long the threaded rods should go into the concrete? (Please don’t say long enough!). I’m thinking of getting two 1m lengths of...

    Erection of steel goal post

My death will be hilarious I'm sure. My latest thinking is to use "CBDE"'s idea but with a scaffold tower and electric hoist. I'll post some photos. Feel free to take the Michael. ps. I have no mates, and my kids are sick of sweeping the chimneys.

    Erection of steel goal post

Hello, I have a steel goalpost to put up and I was wondering the best way of doing it. The complication is the uneven ground around and that the vertical columns are 4m tall, 203x102UB23 steel. The verticals are 100kg each and the horizontal is 140kg. I was thinking either: 1. Lift the...

Fitting large sliding patio doors to a steel frame

Thanks for the reply. I've looked at your other threads and it's been really helpful to me. I'm thinking your suggestion above still leaves a cold bridge as shown by the blue line below. The exposed lintel will draw in the cold from outside and through the frame. The green arrow in the picture...

Fitting large sliding patio doors to a steel frame

Thanks for the reply. I've done the concrete trench fill but that's all so far. The steel is as specified by the structural engineer so I can't change that, give or take a few cm. The design with Building Regs approval is for a cavity wall with the side returns supported on lintels to span the...

Fitting large sliding patio doors to a steel frame

Speaking to a sliding door company they say fixing to steel or timber is ok. They said speak to your builder. Unfortunately, that's me! So, should I fix a 4X2" timber all around the steel or not? I'm thinking it would help with thermal bridging and fixing plasterboard.

Fitting large sliding patio doors to a steel frame

Apparently, having timber in the cavity is no good so I should use structural foam such as Compacfoam instead. I was thinking of fixing a 4x2 timber to the steel as shown below. Anyone done this?

    Beam above bi fold doors

Out of interest the Structural Engineer I used specified a separate Galvanised Angle Lintel for the head. He said that was to avoid corrosion and cold bridging. I've just raised a question about it in another thread in the Building Section here:

Same with the head. The detail supplied by the door company is this: But the Structural Engineer specified a separate galvanised angle lintel. Again, could I just bridge the cavity with timber?

Fitting large sliding patio doors to a steel frame

Hello, What's the best way of fitting a triple track sliding door to a steel sway frame? I want to minimise thermal bridging. I'm building my own extension and have Building Control approved plans including those from the Structural Engineer. I currently have this: Designed this: and...

    Lintel calculation check please

Why not open it all the way? Good question. I’m going to build a stud wall add on so it will be full size for that. I have full plans Building Regs for other stuff in the house including structural calcs and whatever I do I’ll run it by them as the chap has been very helpful. Thanks Tony...

    Lintel calculation check please

Hi, I’d like to increase the size of an internal wall opening and was wondering what lintel size I need. I was hoping to get away with a 65mm x 100mm but now not sure! In the opening below I’d like to replace the existing 1m lintel (red) with a 1.8m (red plus blue) to give a 1.5m clear span...

Rendering around window head and reveals.

Either that or I’ll just cut back the foam, build up the render and then add a plastic trim up the jamb!

Rendering around window head and reveals.

Hi, I’ve looked at other threads but was wondering if someone could give me some more advice. I’ve got windows that look like this: What is the best way of finishing the heads and reveals? I was thinking of fixing a plank to the wall vertically at each reveal as shown below. Then...
