    Gas smart meter 'console'?

Yes, unless it reduces your gas bill significantly. Even then, be cautious - they aren't rolling these things out for the customers benefit...

    Damp Patches

First (and the cheapest/easiest and most important thing) is to make certain the gutters are in good order, and the down pipe is not blocked. Once that is done, consider removing the moss from the wall surface and then take it from there. This is a job to get done ASAP, before more damage...

New heating install, and a rewire...

Yes, that's true; he would need to connect the boiler, programmer etc to the mains as well I suppose...

New heating install, and a rewire...

Hi, I'm in the process of buying a house which will need a central heating system installing (there isn't one there at present), and to be rewired. Assuming I get this more major work done before moving in, what's the best order to get these jobs done it? My thoughts are do the CH first, and...

    No DVB Signal

For stale EPG data, try leaving the set displaying BBC1 (from it's own tuner, not a Sky box or a recorder etc), for an hour or two. As I recall, that is the channel that carries the EPG data.

    Music Centre playing up

Nice work Lucid, and gman76, thanks for sharing your knowledge; I've learnt a good bit as well from this thread :)

    Consumer unit - tight squeeze

Personally (I'm not a sparks, just an electronic engineer, so am braced for the flack!) if it were my place I'd ask to have the MEM box and the EV box replaced with a new RCBO board which has a couple of spare ways in it. Get that done by a sparks, and get them to hook up the solar sub-board...

    Mk2 Kuga Powershift (title edited)

Absolutely, full credit for hanging in there and seeing it through to the end, that was an epic - certainly would have been enough to make me turn tail and run away!

    Wearing a body cam

I think my response to the phone call the OP received would have been along the lines of "thank you for voicing your opinion, but, as you aren't the person how booked the job, nor the owner nor the occupant of the property concerned, it has [insert appropriate word here, depending on how tired I...

    warm cooker isolator

I'm not a sparks, but all of the (MK made) switches in my kitchen that have neons in them behave as you describe, so it sounds like it's nothing to worry about. Does it still do it if you turn the switch off, so the neon goes out? HTH, Colin

    RIP Early 1980's Food Processor

You may very well find it just needs those three caps replacing; they were never noted for their longevity, see; https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/showthread.php?t=69128

    Why Buy A Go-Pro?

I'd go for a genuine Go-Pro, but get a cheap version. GP themselves do a camera for £99 (the 'hero' I think it's called), which gives a good account of itself. I did buy a cheap Chinese copy, and binned it as the image quality was so poor it wasn't worth using. I use mine for kayaking also :)

Ah, fair comment; that'll teach me to read the thread properly before posting (I hope!)

    Overloading a lighting circuit

If your place is split over four floors, are you sure all the lighting is on the one circuit breaker? I would think it would be more likely to be split between 2 or 3 breakers; maybe ground floor on one 6A, first floor on another 6A and 2nd floor + attic on another 6A (substitute 5A rather than...

'Surprisingly' (to me) low PF of gadgets

Interesting thread! What does "CAP" stand for in relation to power factor? That's a new one on me... Thanks :)

What to buy... what to buy?

Thanks for the interesting replies, I've only just seen some of them. Personally, I'm holding on for a share of the wealth of a rich Nigerian prince, who needs to move millions out of Nigeria into the west, he's promised me a cut and all I had to do was lend him my bank account for a few days...

No Earth in Kitchen Downlights. What can I do?

Aside from the wiring in the ceiling (which really needs sorting as already discussed), from the diagram, surely there is no earth connection from the FCU to the two gang plate switch? As far as I can see, link the earth connection on the FCU to the earth cables going out to your lights (on...

What to buy... what to buy?

Agreed. A DPF and (potentially, but hopefully not!) a dual mass fly wheel will give me more than enough to worry about... Definitely would be buying a manual rather than an automatic :)
