    ivy

My detatched garage has one long wall as part of my neighbours boundary - they are growing some sort of plant up the wall - think it's Ivy. Some of it has come through into the garage - through the soffit area it seems. Can I do something to kill it off from within the "privacy" of my own...

    Disposal of dead mice

I've got a mouse issue in my garage - so put down 2 traps and bingo - first night 2 bodies. (Mars Bar as bait!!) The advice on the trap says burn or bury the bodies. Now the Mrs says no way to burying in the garden - we get lots of squirrels/foxes etc that love to dig. Don't want to start a...

    Ideas and Inventions

For 13 years my wife would carefully spread just the "juice" of branston pickle on her sandwiches avoiding the "lumps". She would say - I'm going to invent branston without the lumps - lo and behold a few years ago they did it - doh!! The millions she has cost us - it's a wonder we are even...

    Lifting heavy objects

When my Fridge Freezer was delivered they had a sack truck type thing that had an electric lift built in. The basically wheeled it round to my back door and then used this gizmo to raise it over the door step and then in. Someone out there must know what these things might be called/where to get...

    Lengthy legal wrangle

I think they do eat their own grub at McHeadOffice(TM) I remember a story about a McCEO dying of cancer of the colon or similar - thought to be brought on by eating a burger a day for many years.

    Childrens Trust Fund

You don't get full freedom to decide where to invest it : "What is a Child Trust Fund? It's a long-term savings and investment account - with at least £250 free. The Government will give all children born since 1 September 2002 a lump sum worth at least £250 to open an account...

    CD player says "No CD"

Or if it's 1 out of a 2 disc set that won't play compare the state of the CD's themselves - for dirt or more importantly scratches - it's quite easy to render them useless. You can get a CD resurfaced if you need to (I have had to resort to this with Cd-Roms of original programs - cost might...

    Paying by Visa.

Don't most insurances (travel or credit card included?) have exclusions for acts of god?? Would this not fall into this category??

    Positioning of controls

My 1968 beetle that I had as a 17 year old had windscreen washers that ran off the air pressure from the spare wheel - which presumably was slowly flattening it.... And heating that could melt the soles of your shoes, but did nothing to clear the front window. Ahh - the pretty patterns that...

    Painting over artex.

Definately seal it with PVA or similar. I have had to do this in every room in the house because the artex was so dry and absorbent - it was that bad that when painting the first one with a roller, just going over the edge a bit I had painted 30 seconds earlier caused the previously applied...

Cutting Metal with a mitre saw

Saws for cutting metal seem to have blades more like a grinding disc - see http://www.tooled-up.com/MicroCategory.asp?CID=4&SCID=20&MCID=1147

    Plasterboard ceilings

I don't know about doing it over the old ceiling. Although I reckon it would be better to bring it down - make the job easier I am sure. However - don't nail it - screw it - unless you want lots of nice holes in the new ceiling when the nail heads pop back through in years to come. Also -...

    railway sleepers!

I used the most coarse bladed stanley jetcut handsaw to chop some sleepers down to size. It didn't take half as long as I thought it would and was quite good exercise!!!!! Old sleepers are a little softer than you think. Oil leaking out is a big issue. I know a company that sells and can...

    Laminate Trim

If I do use traditional style trim and the best way is to nail it up, would a cheap nail gun such as http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=91971 work for this application?

    Laminate Trim

Has anyone used the type of laminate trim that consists of a stip that you lay prior to underlay and flooring, and then clip the top finish onto once you have finished? Just wondering if it is worth the extra money for a better finish? Also I imagine you can get the trim off if you ever want...

Cutting curves in ceramic floor tiles

Try tooled-up.com They are geared up for straight cuts but using the wheel you can make freehand cuts and almost "carve" a tile - it is tricky though. Actually - what might be easier is one of these craft tools with a tile attachment - a Dremel (or Rotozip?)

Cutting curves in ceramic floor tiles

The Plasplug electric tile cutters are good for awkward shapes but you need a steady hand - you can remove a bit at a time - almost like grinding or shaving bits off. Beware though - they are messy!!

    Levelling Chipboard floor

I am laying a laminate floor onto a downstairs chipboard floor. It seems as though the sub floor is beams and boards placed on some sort of insulation, which I guess then sits on dpm/concrete. Along one edge the level drops slightly - it was noticable with carpet so will be a nightmare with...
