Fan assisted storage heaters - any use?

OK, good to know the fan assisted storage heaters work. I mentioned the panel heaters as an alternative because typically I would only heat the livingroom for 3 hours in the evening, so for 2 x 2kw heaters that would be approx 12 units of normal rate electricity per day. For storage heaters...

Fan assisted storage heaters - any use?

Does any one have any experience of modern fan assisted storage heaters? I am usually out all day, so would they still retain a decent amount of heat at 7pm? I am considering buying a flat in a building with no gas, so was wondering if fan assisted storage heaters would be OK or if I might...

    Electric heating questions

Thanks for the input. As I suspected, it sounds like off peak electric heating wouldn't work for me so probably best to stick with conventional electic heaters and only use them when required. Since I really only need heat in the living room in the evening and am not too bothered about...

    Electric heating questions

I'm looking at buying a flat that currently uses old electric storage heaters for space heating (building has no gas), and was wondering how do modern electric heating systems compare with GCH for running costs - past experience of storage heaters hasn't been good. Are modern storage heaters...

Reducing cold water pressure for mixer tap shower

Thanks. I've decided that an instant electric shower is out as it will be too much hassle to install, so I will go for either a mixer tap shower or a power shower and install a tank fed cold supply. No doubt a power shower would give a better shower, but it would be harder to install as I...

Reducing cold water pressure for mixer tap shower

True, but I've seen pressure equalising valves that claim a working range of 3 - 150 psi (approx 0.2 - 10 bar). The shower in my ensuite bathroom is a gravity fed mixer shower, which whilst no power shower seems to manage a reasonable flow rate from 15mm pipe. The shower I want to fit over...

Reducing cold water pressure for mixer tap shower

Not entirely, but its not my preferred option. It would certainly cost much more than I originally thought and would require a fair amount of uprooting of floor boards to route the mains supply. Currently thinking the mixer tap shower is the way to go - as you suggest I can try using an...

Reducing cold water pressure for mixer tap shower

Since my previous thread on mixer tap showers got a bit off topic, I thought it best to start a new one... If I were to install a mixer tap shower (e.g. Mira Extra) to my bath which has mains cold water and gravity fed hot water, I gather it is unlikely to work well unless the hot & cold...

Mixer tap showers - advice required

I don't care - why would you expect someone who isn't a sparkie to memorise information such as this - that is what reference texts (and the internet) are for.

Mixer tap showers - advice required

Because I don't know what the Scottish equivalent is called or even if it currently exists (though I know it has been proposed). Not so far :) No doubt you still have electrical fires in England despite part P (and I bet the number hasn't significantly changed since its introduction). I...

Mixer tap showers - advice required

I live in Scotland so Part P doesn't apply. Last time I looked in to it, Scotland hadn't adopted a Part P equivalent but thats probably changed by now - must check.

Mixer tap showers - advice required

I assume that was a reference to Part P? I had been planning to do the electrics myself as well (to hell with Part P) - Although not a sparkie, I have an electrical engineering background and access to the current wiring regs, so am confident of being able to do a proper job.

Mixer tap showers - advice required

Criteria are cost & ease of install. The shower won't be the main shower in the house, so it just needs to be adequate rather than excellent. I don't want to spend more than about £200 and would rather not have to dig holes in the wall or re-tile the bathroom for the plumbing hence the mixer...

Mixer tap showers - advice required

I would like to fit a shower over my bath, the easiest way would be to replace the bath taps with a mixer tap that has a shower attachment but I'm not sure if that would work with my plumbing. The hot water to the bath is from a HW tank fed from a cold water tank in the loft whereas the cold...

Problems with new style Potterton Suprima PCB

Looks like it isn't the PCB - just checked SL and there is only 150V there when the CH only is on as compared to 240V when HW is on which suggests that either the switches in the CH zone valve or the wiring is at fault. It seems that the drop in voltage to 150V at SL confuses the PCB...

Problems with new style Potterton Suprima PCB

After experiencing the usual lockout problems, I replaced the PCB on my Suprima 40 with one of the style ones (part no. 5111506). The boiler has been fine for the last three years but is now playing up again. Sometimes I get the flashing green light (temp satisfied) almost immediately after...

    ACL/Drayton mid position valve query

Thanks, I suspected that might be the case. The motor and microswitches are fine in the old one - a small piece of plastic has broken off from the inards somewhere and I think that this is preventing the switches from operating correctly. Looks like I buy a new one and hope that the bit...

    ACL/Drayton mid position valve query

I need to replace the actuator on an old ACL Lifestyle mid position valve (model 679H340-3OLO) but it seems that this valve has been replaced with a newer Drayton model with a removable actuator. Does anyone know whether or not the newer actuators will fit the older valves, or would I have to...

How can I identify my supply type?

True, but I am planning on installing outdoor sockets for a patio and/or shed and I've seen posts on this forum that lead me to believe that the earthing requirements can be different for the two systems. Is this the case? I've just had a flick through the regs and have found the following...

How can I identify my supply type?

Did you mean you don't recommend lifting the cover or you don't recommend asking Scottish Power? As for shoddy workmanship, I wouldn't be surprised at all, given my experiences of some of the other hammer merchants (sorry tradesmen) used by the builder.
