Downstairs bathroom sometimes smells after flushing (Durgo Valve?)

Hi all, We have a downstairs bathroom with toilet, basin and shower. The toilet is fitted with a Durgo valve. The downstairs bathroom is an extension to the house which was fitted probably 15-20 years ago. We have noticed over the last few months that sometimes a foul smell (its not me...

Neff b45e52 Oven went bang - anything I can do?

No multi meter, however.... Decided to leave it powered off for an hour or so this morning, just in case something internally reset. The above may or may not be related. I then decided just to start fiddling with the knobs to see if it does anything else at all and it fired up! Just testing...

Advice required for boarding out a loft (with down-lights)

After discovering that it looks like the 100mm x 47mm timber looks like it is only available for delivery (4 days) from B&Q, I think I might have answered my own question... I guess I could screw in a 50mm x 47mm timber to the original joist, and then screw in another 50mm x 47mm timber on top...

Advice required for boarding out a loft (with down-lights)

Thats great, thanks Deadbeat. I had another look up in the loft earlier and realised that there are already a few original 4" x 2" joists (not sure how I missed this) going at 90 degrees to the main joists which the ceiling is attached to. I presume they are there for the extra strength (there...

Advice required for boarding out a loft (with down-lights)

Thanks for your reply. Why do you say about fixing the new timber at 90degrees to the existing joists? Is this preferential to fixing them directly on top of the existing joists?

Advice required for boarding out a loft (with down-lights)

:) - It certainly would be! So it sounds like I am going around this the right way. I just need to get some fairly long screws to go through the 63mm length.

Advice required for boarding out a loft (with down-lights)

Hi all, I am currently planning out the boarding/insulating of my loft. We have downlights in a couple of the bedrooms so I want to make sure everything is safe with regards to keeping them away from the insulation. My joists are 35mm wide and 90mm high - the spotlights stick out about...

Best way to block up a chimney?

To be honest I was standing by the fireplace earlier, the wind was howling and it was pretty noisy but I dont think much of a draught was actually coming down the chimney. Its more noisy than anything else. Following the advice in this thread and my own thoughts I think my plan will be as...

Best way to block up a chimney?

Hi all, We recently had an old gas fire removed and the chimney opened up. We now just have an open fireplace which we have tiled and plan to just keep a few big candles etc in. I couldn’t decide whether to block off the chimney or just leave it open. However, the noisy wind and the old...

Central Heating drained now boiler only produced HW (not CH)

Can I edit the title? I meant to say "producing", not "produced". The more I read, the more it seems likely that I might have air in the pump. I will try bleeding it when I get home this afternoon.

Central Heating drained now boiler only produced HW (not CH)

Hi all, Mr father-in-law is currently helping me with some work in the house. We have removed some old redundant pipe to a radiator which no longer exists and also replaced the mains stop cock and removed a sure-stop (electronic stop-cock button) which I did not trust. As part of the work the...

Bathroom installer cock up? Shower pump plumbed into mains

Thank you guys. It doesnt fill you with confidence does it. Can anyone point me in the direction of the water regs so that I can quote it? Thanks Oh, and I just went online and printed the intstruction guide for the pump which says in big bold letters: THIS PUMP MUST NOT BE CONNECTED TO THE...

Bathroom installer cock up? Shower pump plumbed into mains

Hi all, We had a new bathroom fitted about 6 months ago. The company who did the work sent a bathroom fitter who had spent most of his life living and working in the Netherlands. He was a brilliant tiler and meticulous in his work (the job took 4 weeks instead of the quoted 2 weeks!) but we...
