Adding light switch from a plug socket ?

Unless my eyes are deceiving me, why do you have flex going to the switch.

    Too high a voltage

I am going to try this again with her. The problem is she has these fancy light fittings that are all verdigris (green metal to me) and they do not look good with CFL's. But it will be her choice.

    Rented house dodgy wiring help

The fan should have an isolator. It may be a humidity fan when you take the cover off see if there uis any litttle vents in the body of the cover the sensor is usually behind that. Often the humidity sensitivity can be adjusted. But if the place shows signs of mould then let it run. On the...

    Too high a voltage

Thanks Efiste2 a great help. Ill check the neighbours and see if a call to the DNO is needed. 255V was the peak i had a couple of points hovering between 253 and 255 but still right on the limit.

    Too high a voltage

Thanks all for the replies. The place is an apartment in an old converted house. Its the middle one of three one on each flooor. I am going to measure one of the neighbours voltages to see if they have the same. No sub station at the bottom of the garden (in fact no garden). Is it worth...

    Too high a voltage

I know this is only just above the acceptable but it is above. What can be done if a domestic single phase supply is reading too high. I went to a house today and the voltage was reading 255v. Meter is calibrated I checked at several sockets and light points all the same reading...

Yes i thought that once the load was connected it probably shut something down in the dimmer. Thanks you.ve confirmed my thoughts. RF I did check all the contacts and theyre good as new and i checked the "tension" across the terminals and that was all ok. Thanks again

    Still Not Managed 100%....

Thanks to both the replies and they highlight the confusion thats out there . Thats why i was interested in what Securesparks recent experience had said. Personally i test it if it is attached to a Switched FCU and has flex going to the appliance. Why, well most people agree for example a...

    halogen uplighters

I have two halogen uplighters. They are the father and child design with the child part being an ELV lamp on a dimmer. These work absolutely fine. However both the halogen uplights (230v) have stopped working. Its not the lamps and when i measure at the lamp terminals they have 230 v (238 to...

    Does this seem expensive?

So are they installing a new RCD protected "box" for the £550. Also question if they have made a mistake and whether the 190 for the cooker radial is already included in the 550 for the "box". Is it 6mm cable or even 10mm that they are having to install. Is 10 feet as the cable runs or is it as...

    Blinkin shower......again.

Hi, if the switch (roof) is easy to get to personally i would prefer to check for voltage there than standing in a shower where there may be water etc. Make sure you know how to use your meter then measure across the live and neutral at the switch. You should have two sets of red or brown...

    Another "BONDING" Question

Got it thanks on the 544.2.4 but still not on the why not run it back to the CU in fact 544.2.5 more or less implies it is acceptable ie use of a socket outlets earth connection when using a short piece of flex.

    Another "BONDING" Question

Just read 701.415.2 and sorry this is my enquiring mind, i understand that it says it should be done preferably close to the point of entry of extraneous-conductive parts but i dont understand why. Is it so there is less likely hood of a disconnect occuring by changes to the pipe runs (i would...

    Another "BONDING" Question

BAS, Thanks for the reply it helps a lot but i am with you until your last sentence Also, don't forget that the cpcs themselves can be part of the bonding, so it isn't necessary to connect directly to the cpc terminal on each appliance I am probably being thick but i cant follow that, could...

    Another "BONDING" Question

Hi Dingbat ive read it and if i ve understood it, a different matter all together, then 415.2.1 to me would mean bond all the pipes rads etc together then run this back to the CU and the earth bar in it. That way its "connected to the protective conductors of all equipment including socket...
