I have used normal loft insulation. Doesn't need to be very thick, just a few millimeters between the pipe and the joist should do it.

Thanks I have 99.9% made my mind up to tell them they need to get someone in anyway. I'll have a go at most jobs, but i don't really want mess with the inside of a gas appliance. Just wanted to know what the brass part was and if it could be fixed simply by tightening it up a bit. Cheers

My friend has a leaking combi boiler. I took the front off and theres a brass disc-like cylinder about 4 inches in diameter with a nipple in the centre with a microswitch mounted in front of that. The leak is coming from the middle of the nipple. It looks like it can be tightened up - is this...
