    Rear extension design & Plan

Fluffster - yes, I believe so woody - Good points well made - thanks. I think I was just a bit taken aback initially with the quotation, but when you start to think about it in these terms then it starts to make sense... Thanks again.

    Rear extension design & Plan

Hi I have been quoted £450 by a surveyor to draw up a design for a single storey, sloping roof rear kitchen extension for my mid-terrace house. The price includes calculations for the dimensions/specs of an RSJ to support the existing back wall. I've been told no planning permission will...

    Gas Boiler in Loft

Thanks guys I wish my loft looked like that  It's a victorian terrace, and is in a bit of a mess! The other thing to bear in mind is that the loft is completely uninsulated, and gets freezing cold in the winter - that was the other reason I had thought of trying to get rid of all the...

    Gas Boiler in Loft

I'm doing a bit of planning ahead here. I have a Potterton (conventional) gas boiler in the loft, which by the look of it is quite old. I'm not that comfortable with it in the loft, as I can't keep an eye on it. This probably seems completely irrational; as I'm sure most people don't...

Electric element for Bathroom Towel Rail

Agreed. Personally, I've found this site to be enormously helpful - not just in answering my direct questions but also in reading other postings; and I only discovered it a few days ago. In general, the negatives (aggressive/sarcastic postings) are outweighed by the positives (a range of...

    Bathroom spotlight connections

I have bought 3 spotlights for my bathroom (IP65 rated), and would like to know the most appropriate way of wiring them in. I have existing wiring and pullcord switch in place from the old (single) bathroom light. I have bought a transformer for each light. Can I do the following: -...

    Protective Impregnator for porcelain tiles

Many thanks Nelly. I have a few spare tiles which I'll test it on before use. I'd be in terrible trouble with the mrs if it changed the look of them significantly

    Protective Impregnator for porcelain tiles

I have just tiled my bathroom, and have been advised to treat the porcelain tiles with Lithofin FZ Protective Impregnator, which is supposed to make them easier to keep clean in the long term. Should I apply this to the tiles before grouting, to protect from the grout; or after; to protect...

Electric element for Bathroom Towel Rail

Securespark - thanks. It's about 1.5m from the nearest point of the bath, which has a fixed shower screen in place, so unlikely to come into any contact with water. Regarding the plumbing and fitting the rail into the hot water circuit - that's a really good idea. However, I've done the...

Electric element for Bathroom Towel Rail

Thank you very much for your advice so far, it's much appreciated. Any thoughts on Question 3 regarding a way of timing the rail to switch on/off?

Electric element for Bathroom Towel Rail

Qed - you'll have to excuse my ignorance - what's the shower cpc? should I get an electrician in to do these measurements once I've done the work, or could I do this with a multimeter d'you think?

Electric element for Bathroom Towel Rail

Pensdown, you got there first and pre-empted my question! many thanks. I'll connect the rail to a blanking plate in the wall then, and switch it in the airing cupboard. It isn't within reach of the bath, but I'd rather just go for the safest possible option (being a rather cautious DIY'er...

Electric element for Bathroom Towel Rail

Thanks Qed I had an incline that this work would have to be inspected by someone, so thanks for the info - I'll make sure it's done before being used. Does the actual towel rail need to be bonded? Is it not sufficient to bond the copper pipework which supplies water to the rail? The...

Electric element for Bathroom Towel Rail

I'm installing a heated towel rail in the bathroom, which is plumbed into the central heating, but also has an electric heating element for use when the central heating is off. I'm planning on wiring the element into a switched fused spur, mounted at the bottom of the bathroom wall. I'd be...

Install pipework for exposed thermostatic mixer shower

chrishutt - I'm not ignoring anyone's advice, as I said in my previous post - I really appreciate it. I'm just completely in the dark when it comes to these sorts of jobs, so I apologise if I don't immediately understand things. My comment re "calling in the professionals" certainly wasn't...

Install pipework for exposed thermostatic mixer shower

Thanks for the help, appreciate it. Still not sure how I screw the mixer onto anything however, the only way i can see that it comes into contact with the wall/tile is via the pipe connectors. NB...I reckon I might have to call in the Professionals! I'm only trying to do this myself...
