Dead leg problem? Outside tap removal, but pipes are underground...

I think that's a good question actually :) I'm at work now but will try it when home and see what happens. Many thanks Yes, we've had it insulated previously. I had some spare rockwool and just stuffed the whole cavity with it. Removed now just so that the plumber could see it when he came...

Dead leg problem? Outside tap removal, but pipes are underground...

Many thanks @Madrab I presume you mean at the outside tap to remove any water that's been stagnating? Do correct me if I'm wrong though. But if I'm right I guess it seems the dead leg is a potential cause for concern and as suspected I need to either dig to find the source and have it capped...

Dead leg problem? Outside tap removal, but pipes are underground...

Hi all Got a very old looking outside tap at our house which is not in use. A plumber is visiting soon to do a bathroom refit, and whilst here will remove the tap and cap it off. I asked whether this would cause a problem with a "dead leg" and he said no, but I want to check with you guys here...

Screwfix Drill/Impact Driver Twin Pack Bargains - DeWalt vs Makita

Hi folks Having asked on another couple of forums, some people elsewhere said you should never buy power tools from places like Toolstation and Screwfix. The logic being that they are always cheaper elsewhere and they tend to be poorly spec'd/priced cheaply to lure people in to a brand...

If a radiator has no TRV - what does it need instead?

Thanks for the recommendation. They don't seem all that readily available. Not from a google search that is... The ones I have are Plumb Centre Tradefix / Wolseley... Presume they're budget, but are they good enough? Our central heating is more of a back up as the main heat in the house...

If a radiator has no TRV - what does it need instead?

Thanks for confirming. I've just had a rummage and found a couple of these: To demonstrate my ignorance even further.... They're lockshield valves aren't they? If so, the piece on the right - is that part of it? I have two valves, but only one of those pieces. Thanks again

If a radiator has no TRV - what does it need instead?

Hey Sorry for the very basic question! Just putting my Screwfix shopping order together. We'll be putting a radiator in the bathroom and don't want that to have a TRV. So what does it have instead? A lockshield on both sides? Any recommendations on what to get for a Stelrad Compact...

Screwfix Drill/Impact Driver Twin Pack Bargains - DeWalt vs Makita

Hi folks First up, in case anyone hasn't seen it there's an extra 10% off at Screwfix until midnight tonight... So I've been thinking to get a new cordless drill set as my old Ryobis are completely passed it. These two options have really caught my eye and with the additional money off come...

Shower option - cast your vote! Cold from loft tank VS Pressure Equalising Valve?

Ah, I see. Thanks for explaining. I didn't realise that unvented cylinders had them. Would it literally be the same type of part, or a version thereof? The one I'm looking at is: https://www.bes.co.uk/water-pressure-equalising-valve-16711/ Cheers

Shower option - cast your vote! Cold from loft tank VS Pressure Equalising Valve?

Many thanks for your reply @flameport Have you (or anyone else for that matter) had much experience of pressure equalising valves going wrong? Thanks for pointing that out. I got a new old stock Pegler unit which is suitable from 0.1 to 10 bar so should be all good on that front. Any...

Shower option - cast your vote! Cold from loft tank VS Pressure Equalising Valve?

First - an apology for monopolising the forum with all my plumbing questions! I'm hoping this will be my last and I'll move onto something else (like choosing a woodburner, which is the next thing on the to do list)... My situation... We've having a bathroom refit and will have a new bath with...

Have you ever seen mice have a nibble on vertical plastic pipes?

Hmmm, that's not good. If it helps any, a couple of years ago we did have some re-wiring done and a new consumer unit put in. So at least it's up to spec. Hadn't thought of the potential fire risk, which is quite a worry.

Have you ever seen mice have a nibble on vertical plastic pipes?

Thanks for all the replies. Methinks I'll get all the plastic changed for copper then while he's here and everything is drained. RE electric cable - Excuse the naive question... If a mice or similar chews into an electric cable and causes a short, are we talking fire? Or trip switch going...

Thanks @jeff the gasman By fittings do you mean bits like the elbow in the 2nd photo?

Have you ever seen mice have a nibble on vertical plastic pipes?

Hi folks We live in the sticks and sometimes have mice in the house. I even saw a stoat once in the loft! Most of our pipework is copper, but there are a couple of bits that are plastic which I'm going to have changed to copper while the plumber is here doing other work. It's not worth the...

Is 22mm pipe worth it when using a 15mm pressure equalising valve?

Hi there We did consider taking a cold feed from the loft tank, but decided to use the equalising valve in the end, for a few reasons. The head of water is around 2.5m. Not great, I know. And the length of pipe run from the cylinder to the bath hot tap is around 5.5m. I think based on what...

Is 22mm pipe worth it when using a 15mm pressure equalising valve?

Hi all Making some final decisions on the plumbing for our bathroom refit. Background: we'll be having a shower mixer tap on the bath, hot water is gravity fed, and cold is mains. So I'll be having a pressure equalising valve (PEV) before the shower mixer to balance the hot and cold. I know...
