Quick, run a cable back up to the house!

Can anyone tell me exactly what this is under a manhole cover?

Definitely an oil injection point On the phase layout, a lot of smaller electricity undertakings used odd phase rotations pre nationalisation and so when the national grid was formed they did keep the old phasing as was.

    Generator earthing to house earth.

Agreed. However without a reference the generator ‘earth’ will be just floating, potentially resulting in a voltage existing between the generator (which I would think has a metal frame) and the ground. Every generator I have ever worked on, okay typically bigger (50-500kva) has an earth...

    Generator earthing to house earth.

So I’m not going mad then. I thought I had a point!

    Generator earthing to house earth.

Cable fault, overhead line down, not saying every time but if there’s a power cut there is a usually a reason for it

    Generator earthing to house earth.

    Care to elaborate?

    Generator earthing to house earth.

What is the earthing arrangement in the house? Unless it’s TT you cannot use the DNO earth for your generator, as if there is a power cut, there is a good chance there probably won’t be an earth. Also best practice to have it completely separated from the mains, so no risk of backfeeding the...

    Pipes in the ground

Have you got any pictures of your set up in the garage?

    Pipes in the ground

What electricity do you have in the garage, it does look like it could be an old paper lead cable (PILC) often used a supply cable but they were also used as private cables

Rewiring Quote for 3 bed terraced house for 9100 including VAT

All I can think reading this is thank god I didn’t quote the job for the OP! You get what you pay for. Put a spec together for the job, for what you want, get 3 quotes from recommended tradesman, so they can all quote like for like and go from there. Either the tradesman didn’t want the job (or...

Clueless flat owner trying to find a solution

So there should be room to get some sort of removable panel in. Or an opportunity to improve the look of the whole lot

Clueless flat owner trying to find a solution

How much space between the left of the gas box and the front of the meters etc? As above, maybe an l shaped cupboard to cover the gas meters and the electric ones

Clueless flat owner trying to find a solution

I think seeing the layout you have there you’d struggle to get something off the shelf. Possibly your best bet is to get a carpenter or similar who can build something in situe to house it all

Clueless flat owner trying to find a solution

They could be moved yes, but only by your DNO (depending on your area). As they are flats im guessing they’ll only allow a ground floor location and probably all in one location due the need for emergency isolation in case of fire etc. Expect a big bill! you will need the DNO to move the...

    Interesting one today

Been to price a job for a customer, converting an outbuilding to a flat for his daughter. There is an existing house where the mother lives, large dormer bungalow, a garage block, stable block converted into another flat, lived in by the brother, the customer lives in a bungalow at the bottom of...

    Current on earth?

They are all Hager rcbos, with the functional earth, so I wonder if maybe these rcbos have some slightly more sensitive electronics in them After sitting and thinking a while, Im still on the path of a neutral fault

    Current on earth?

Okay so this clearly isn’t sorted. I started today transferring all the sub boards from the generator to the mains. Connected up the main house this morning, all good. Worked fine all day, come 5.30 when I had arranged a shutdown, problems started. I reconnected and tested the supply to the...

    Current on earth?

I’m fairly confident I was testing correctly, but there’s always the chance I missed something obvious, was hoping to go back today to verify.

    Current on earth?

Well sorry to disappoint, but think the issue has been solved. I arrived on site today to no power (fortunately most of the site is still running off generators) the DNO swiftly arrived as the fault was affecting multiple houses. The have replaced a pole termination and the cable going up the...
