    Shed base

I'm building it myself. The concrete floor is the finished floor surface. No wooden bearers.

    Shed base

Thanks for your assistance on this. The only reason I got ply from B&q was because they'll cut it precisely so I can use it for shuttering. £42 a sheet certainly made me wince

    Shed base

Hi guys. I'm building a shed measuring 13ft x 8ft (I know 12ft would be better for timber sizes but I am building as big as I can in the space the missus has allocated). Today I've dug down 150mm ish to the depth I want my concrete. See pictures. The corner of the shed will be in front of the...

    Toilet issue

My toilet, at the ripe young age of 6 years old, has started letting water through the cistern. It only happens on some flushes. Doesn't matter if its a half flush or full flush. It's an ideal standard toilet. I've attached pictures of it's innards. So here are the two flush modes. 1. Push the...

    Smoke alarm wiring

If those alarms are interlinked, you will have 3 cores and earth at each. You can put any smokes up. I recommend fireangel, they look sleek and modern. By the way, definitely replace them. Smokes arent guarranteed to last longer than ten years.

    Ring doorbell Friedland chime wiring

Can you connect two ring doorbells to one chime? I would check the instructions for that. As for the wiring, its anyones guess. You appear to have three sets of bellwire leaving that chime. Do you have three buttons? An additional chime? I'm taking the red and black to be your permanent feed in.

Smart meter In Home Display IHD

I had a SMETS2 meter fitted by Bulb. I switched to PFP (mistake) and the IHD stopped working - it would continuously reboot itself. PFP, being a very small supplier, initially put me forward for an engineer visit to get things working. I don't think they ever even knew I had a smart meter - they...

Electrician not providing certificate for new circuit

I have a funny feeling the guy isnt registered, and the £80 was what he'd have to pay his registered mate to come round and test and certify his work. There's blokes at my work who do full rewires on the side without any testing and certification. Not saying its right, it isnt. But if you're...

Using same petrol funnel for two stroke machines and mower

Out of interest, when a petrol station has fuel delivered, the tanker driver often uses the same hoses for diesel and petrol, simply draining them out before swapping over.

    Underated cables.

The thing is most high current applications in the domestic world are relatively intermittent - 5 minute showers, 30 minute cooking etc. Hence we often see 10kw showers hanging onto a 32A MCB. A 32A MCB will take 50A for 1000 seconds. The real problems will start when we start reintroducing a...

    Underated cables.

I do EICRs on social housing and the odd bit of install work. We have it drummed into us about cooker and ring circuits in bungalows, and shower circuits in general, that we have to check the reference method in the loft. If we find a cooker cct in a bungalow, in 6mm on a B32 we have to go in...

    Shower circuit MCB intermittent tripping

Looking at the trip curves for 60898 MCBs, a B32 takes 1000 seconds to trip at 50A. (16 or so minutes) There's your answer. The cable is too small. It is at risk of overheating as its in insulation. It has dangerous joints. It needs rewiring. I really wouldnt use it.

    Garage power

And yes, its relatively common to have an unused MCB where alterations have occured in the past. Its also relatively common to have mislabelled MCBs - you may find that MCB feeds another socket circuit.

    Garage power

Pretty sure I've seen newer MCBs fitted to those old MEM boards, but I wouldnt advise it. TBH I would look at getting the funds together to replace that board. It has a single point of failure for your entire house (that RCD). Nowadays we individually RCD protect circuits so there is no single...

    Kitchen Ring Problem

All legs of a ring have to be capable of carrying 20A (this is a specific reg). This is why if you wire a ring reference method 101 (bungalows) you must use 4mm² cable or derate it to 20A.

What have I done wrong wiring up this boiler thermostat?

Are there any other devices connected? An old programmer or stat? Are you able to trace the entire cable from the boiler to the receiver? As suggested, temporarily link the control wires and see if the boiler fires up.

    Registering as business

For a few years now I've been operating in my local area as a Handyman. My sole form of picking up business has been a Facebook page which I occasionally share in local groups. The only thing I have registered for my business is public liability insurance. I'm not registered with anybody else...

    Training To Become An Electrician

I know I'm late to this party, but I started an apprenticeship aged 33. Loving life. Though you didn't mention your age. I found an employer that treats apprentices with respect and equally to the trades staff in terms of conditions. And the pay is very good. £15k year 1. 17k year 2. 18.5k year...

    Flush mechanism problem

We're having a spot of bother with our bog. Water is trickling into the pan. It doesn't do this every time it's flushed, but what I've noticed is if the flush mechanism cuts off with a thud after flushing, it doesn't trickle. If there's no thud, it does trickle. Does this valve have any kind...
