No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

See image. I connected the black and grey on each set with each other in a connector block. On the other switch, I touched one probe to black and the other to grey. I did it for both sets. The reading did not even register. It stayed at 1, which seems to be default. JH

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

There are two sets of wires on the other switch. How do I know which set to join together? Trial and error?

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

That means I misunderstood. I've been touching both probes to the same wire, one at a time. If this is wrong, where should I be touching the other probe? To earth? JH

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

Ok, with the power off, I touched both probes to the same wire, one at a time. Every single one showed some type of reading but that dwindled down to close to zero. However, one set of wires (Black, Grey and Brown) showed erratic readings and although it came down towards zero it jumped up again...

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

OK, so next, you said: On my MM, it shows 20k, 2k and 200. Which setting do I use? Do I test with one probe on earth and the other touching each of the wires in turn? What should I want to see on the readout? JH

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

So to clarify, on the working switch where I have 2 x 3core and 2 x 2core, the 2 core wires are connected to the two sets of lights I have on the ceiling, while the 3 core wires run to the other 2-way switch. Is that correct? Since I have two sets of lights on the ceiling (hence the 2-gang...

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

Thanks for the write-up. I'm working my way through it. My first question is, do I have 2-core system or 3-core system? On my Working switch, I have two sets which have 3 wires coming out and the other two sets which have two wires coming out. On the other side, each sleeve has 3 wires coming...

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

I have uploaded 2 pics. The NonWorkingK2 image is a picture of the switch which is not working and has the wire sleeves behind the backbox. I can't pull the wire sleeves out but peering very closely, I see that the top 3 wires are coming from the same sleeve. So I assume the other 3 wires are...

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

So is there anything I can do about the dead wires?

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

The guy at Lightwave told me to connect just two wires and the rest is taken care off via the app. One Live and one Switched Live. Cap the rest. I have already connected my 2-way passage one in the same way. JH

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

I did connect the new Lightwave Smart Switch to the non-working outlet initially but since that didn't light up, I tested the wires and found no voltage. So I took it off and reconnected an older switch to see if that would make a difference. JH

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

Ok, I have taken 3 more photos of the non-working outlet. I have connected a different switch here (which was from the other side of the 2-way because that switch is definitely working). On the NoSleeves image, you can see that the sleeves are not visible because they are behind the back box. I...

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

I have one Smart Switch connected and one old switch connected on the 2-way system. The smart switch works and the old switch doesn't work. There is voltage at the smart switch and no voltage at the outlet where the old switch is connected. I have just tested the terminals on the Continuity...

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

It's difficult to do that because there are 3 sleeves coming out of one outlet and I can't remember which wires led to which terminal. On the non-working outlet, the sleeves are inside the wall so I can't even see which wires come from which sleeve. However, I have connected my old working...

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

That's what I'm not sure off. It was intermittent. I thought it was because of stiff buttons.

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

One of my switches now has the new Smart Switch in there with only 2 wires connected to it. The Live and Switched Live. The other switch was working intermittently before I took it off anyway. I thought it was because of stiff buttons but it may have been dead wires all along. So I'm not sure...

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

I have connected wires to each of the 6 terminals with wires in each of them and tested each one with earth, but no reading on any one. JH

I'm using the multimeter on the AC Voltage (600) setting. JH

No Voltage on Wires in Light Switch

I've installed one so far with the new Lightwave switch and that lights up properly. I plan to do the same for the other other but no voltage. I'm using the only earth terminal in the back box. Is there another way to test it?
