Suitable roof construction for loft conversion

This is pie in the sky at the moment, but at some point when we come into money, whenever that will be, I'd like to look at converting my loft into an extra bedroom, possibly bathroom plus a nice snug type space. From reading the many threads on here I would imagine I'd need new joists for the...

    Extension insulation

Architect also agrees with the builder (the 2 are not connected) so I guess that's how it is and I was just expecting too much.

    Extension insulation

Still have some in the basement. Will measure and let you know.

    Extension insulation

It certainly makes sense, maybe I was just hoping for too much. Would that still.explain the warmer roof?

    Extension insulation

The construction, from inside to outside is plasterboard, block, insulation on outside of block, cavity, brick. Should be plenty of thermal mass there I'd hope.

    Extension insulation

He has replied saying as there is no ceiling in the extension even with the insulation there will be a bit more heat loss than the rest of the house, which has a ceiling and thus a big, vented gap between it and the roof itself, which would explain the difference. He suggests raising the...

    Extension insulation

I've sent him the photo but I cant imagine he will say anything other than that is normal. To say otherwise would mean he would have to fix, put new plasterboard up, replaster and then redecorate.

    Extension insulation

Not what I wanted to hear. Is this something I should be raising with the builder?

    Extension insulation

I have had a small extension built which has a vaulted ceiling. The roof insulation installed was some form of Celotex foil backed stuff that was fairly thick. However we have found that although it heats well, it cools down very quickly, more so than the rest of the house. Having seen the...

Costly fix hasn't worked. Where do I stand?

He has been round and we have agreed to monitor it until it happens again at which point he will come straight out and investigate so we can see if it is still the original condensation issue or a leak at the ridge.

    Fan going again?

Not sure what you mean by your reply - are you suggesting it needs another new fan or are you questioning what I mean by new fan?

    How Long Is Too Long?

Thanks for the reply. Apologies for not updating sooner but I did eventually get him to respond and come over and finish the job with no arguments so I can't complain. Would have been nice to not have to wait so long and to not chase chase chase but it is done. Thanks for the advice though.

    Fan going again?

I will give one I know a call as soon as he is back from his holiday. Comes recommended.

    Fan going again?

:-( I'd never heard of them until I bought this house. Always had WB before.

    Fan going again?

I was only told the fan unit was failing and struggling to feed the system enough air. Certainly replacing it sorted the problem, until now.

    Fan going again?

I know of 2 decent ones but having just finished a bit of building work and having a sudden issue with my roof, I am skint so was hoping for some good news....

    Fan going again?

Totally understand. It cost about £300 last time which makes me wonder if taking out boiler cover would be a cheaper option.

    Fan going again?

I have a Feroli Modena 102 combi and last year it kept cutting out. Diagnosis was a faulty fan and possibly pressure sensor. The boiler guy showed me what was happening as when he fully screwed the casing on you could hear the boiler trying to suck air in around the seal. Both were replaced and...

Public liability insurance for part time

I'm not a trade but did look into this when I was considering becoming a part time music teacher. The cost seems to be quite minimal unless you are raking in loads of money so I think it would be far better to have some. Easiest thing would be to get some quotes online (think I used one of the...

Water pressure too high for boiler?

Ok thanks, clearly a misinformed post on the other thread then. The pressure never goes above 2 bar. Thankfully just earlier today I did find a leak in a joint which has now been fixed and the pressure is holding. Thankfully.
