Bought a light - Does this look safe?

I would not care, I am like that, I would just use it, but you asked.

    Off-peak supply not turning on?

Thank you for letting us all know. Nearly two years to get it fixed, no wonder some people don't want smart meters. I did in the end get my smart meter fitted, it was in by end of Jan 24, we got an off-peak tariff, but nearly 14 months latter and still not being paid for export, moved from...

Bought a light - Does this look safe?

Unless things have changed so the dangling bit may be OK, but the part which is bolted to the wall, needs an earth cable even if the fitting is class II. Having a plug does not help, it's bolted to the wall.

    Cabling for motorised valves

I have motorised valves in all rooms, all wireless, they are often called TRV's, but with electronic heads, they are motorised valves. With gas boilers they modulate, i.e. turn up and down, not on and off, so the controls also need to turn up/down, not on/off, so an old fashion hard-wired...

wiring up a lighting photocell without a neutral wire?

The minimum lamp size is a problem. I had the same problem, and this smart switch cured it for me, but it needs a hub, so unless using other smart devices it can work out expensive. PIR bulb may help? Or just a smart bulb, they have dropped in price so much, last ones I got at £5 each, the...

    Xmas light snap fix

Thanks, I was about to dump some lamps, now I will remove and keep the fly lead in case any of my new lamps damaged.

    Lights flickering

From Wiki on this forum lights tend to be daisy-chained ceiling rose to ceiling rose, a tester like this may find which is last ceiling rose to be working, seems likely a junction box in the kitchen, these are often used to replace ceiling roses when down lights are fitted. However, if down...

    Earth question - Shaver socket

If we have food which is bad, we can get ill as a result. If we know a freezer has failed, we will dump the food, or at least not re-freeze it, but where an RCD has been reset, we may not realise food has defrosted, and so eat bad food, where food is cooked then likely the cooking will get rid...

    Earth question - Shaver socket

I would think there are many more times when the supply has tripped before anyone has had a shock than tripping while someone is getting a shock. However, very hard to prove. Not sure if that is true. However, the shaver socket is designed to run a shaver from, not charge a shaver when not in...

Tool recommendation for cutting 25mm cable entry

If the hole already exists as 20 mm, I use a cone cutter.

    Car battery jump starter recommendations

I was rather disappointed with the lithium jump start pack. It said how it could be damaged if cranked for too long etc. And I don't crank an engine with a stop watch in my hand.

    RCD trip

No, one RCD would trip the other, can't run RCD's in parallel. Any extension lead would require someone manually to swap over the supply, you can use a battery we call it an UPS, uninterruptible power supply, it can be portable as shown, limit around 2 kWh due to weight, or built in like mine...

    Hive stat

There are two types of thermostat/programmer wiring wise, those with volt free contacts, and those where the contacts are connected to the supply to the device. Any electronic thermostat/programmer must get power from somewhere, be it battery or mains, with built-in mains power supply or...

    RCD trip

There was a RCD with a built-in warning light to say when near the tripping limit, think it was called the X-pole, but google seems to find non-electrical items when I feed that in to the search engine. Today there is a move from a RCD feeding many MCB's to the use of RCBO's which combines the...

    Wiring thermostat hub with boiler

Bosch do seem to copy and paste parts of their instructions, asking for things like Type A RCD protection on the supply. But also if you read carefully often one realises it is a watch my back exercise, where it will say a Type A RCD should be fitted where required, well of course it should be...

    Wiring thermostat hub with boiler

I like the idea of being able to simply unplug the central heating boiler in the event of a power cut, and plugging it into some other power supply. I have not done it with my own house, as have built in back-up supply, so can't see the need to change. I agree with @EFLImpudence that easier...

Switching from Danfoss to Drayton WT734

Looking at this, 9 and 10 seem to be from the thermostats. I would think you can trace the 2 black wires and see what else is from the same cable. So, identifying the two thermostat cables. Personally, I would wait until the summer, this is not the time of the year to make a mistake which means...

Switching from Danfoss to Drayton WT734

If we look at the universal backplate with the likes of Hive and Drayton Wiser there are three options, with a combi-boiler the two channel is not really required, as the second channel is for domestic hot water so either one or three channel. In the main when moving to Wiser there is no need...

Replacement LED Driver for 36v 12w

36 volts, 12 watts, and lamps could be in 125 groups of 8 with a resistor which would be 12 watt so fixed voltage, or 150 groups of 10 which would not need a resistor and use 9.6 watts, and be fixed current, but there is no reference to fixed current, so seems likely fixed voltage of 36 volts...

Question about reinstating socket in shed

    1) Location, Wales likely need to register the work, England no longer required I think. 2) Unless using a 10 mA RCD socket then pointless fitting a RCD protected socket when already RCD protected. 3) Twin and earth not rated for external use, but as long as it passes the testing then I would...
