    Bulk sand and rain

Hi, I have a ton bag of sharp sand sat on my drive ready for laying some block paving. Unfortunately it was delivered late and now its been stuck in a day of rain uncovered with more on the way. Question is, should I cover it to stop more rain getting in or am I best leaving it exposed to...

French doors replacing window - lintel question

Thanks Woody, its hard to tell of its loose or not because its slightly twisted. I can insert a coat hanger through the gap in a lot of places which makes me think its not actually supporting the wallplate hence my question. As for the level of the lintel, the reason the top of the new frame...

    Remedial action on insulated loft

I'm not a builder but I currently doing a loft conversion bit by bit. My bungalow is an early 70s with concrete tiles and old bitumen felt. Most of the roof is coming off soon but building control advised any old section left that were to be insulated needed I think a 40mm air gap under the...

Dormer Bungalow - GRP the way to go?

If it helps my bungalow has a current box dormer with flat roof. I'm about to start a hip to gable and my architect said where possible do pitched roof dormers. Less prone to leaks, look better and warmer.

    Expanding foam and ridge tiles

Hi, been keeping an eye on a bungalow near me that has a single story extension being built. The roof tiles are now on and visible under the ridge tiles and the tiles in the valley seems to be yellow expanding foam. Is this a legit method ! . Seems odd to me ?

Given that the 'installer' has also jammed a cross head screw I wonder what other short cuts he has taken !

    Insulating loft with loft conversion

If it helps i have exactly the same, except I am about to rip out the current loft job and do it properly. The architect drawings specify celotex or similar between the roof rafters ie enclosing the roof and structure in insulation and soundproofing between the loft floor joists.

    Electric Shower Cabling

Cable size depends on additional factors not just the Kw rating of the shower. If the cable run is long or if it runs through a loft space with lots of insulation etc, this needs taking into consideration. Any electrician should point this out and do a cable size calculation accordingly...

Permitted development & lawful development certificates.

I finally got a reply ! They have issued a LDC based on my hip to gable plans with rear dormer and kitchen extension woohoo :) Opinion was indeed correct here, and as I kept suggesting to my architect who also said yes it should be PD. I will speak to him tomorrow and see what made them...

    Kitchen integrated appliance switching isolation

Thanks for the replies etc. It's not a question of my not wanting to do it, it makes very perfect sense to be able to conveniently disconnect appliances locally leaving the rest if the circuit energised, my issue is the location of the switch :)
