    Fitting Kitchen Chimney Extractor

Hi, I'm just about to install my extractor chimney. It's the type which can recirculate using carbon filters or extract to an outside vent. Obviously the best option is the latter as I have access to the outside wall. Unfortunately, the installation instructions just say that I will need to...

Recommended method for cutting kitchen base unit

Thanks everyone. I've bought a reverse cut blade now, and I'll try that on the side which isn't showing first. If that doesn't work out, I'll buy a Jetsaw and try that. The baton idea sounds interesting. Again, one to try if my hand-sawing starts to look ropey ;) Good tip about the PVA, I'll...

Recommended method for cutting kitchen base unit

I have to trim the back of an MFI kitchen base unit. Unfortunately the edge butts up against a wall and while a fridge is almost certainly going to cover it, I need it to at least look decent. What I want to know is how best to cut the unit to avoid splintering. I have a Bosch jigsaw with a...

    Norris A7 Shoulder Plane

It's OK, I appreciate all opinions on it :) I think if I'd seen some of the excellent A7 copies that retail around £450 I'd have guessed at £100 to be honest. Now I know that it's because it's more of a collector's piece than simply just a "great plane". I have to admit though, I...

    Norris A7 Shoulder Plane

Hi, Sorry I didn't put this on the tools forum but I thought this was more appropriate :) A friend of mine has asked me to sell some tools for him and amongst the normal old Stanley planes, wooden mallets and various other stuff, there's a Norris A7 shoulder plane. There's a picture of it...

    inside an electronic dimable transformer

Some interesting info here: http://www.epn-online.com/page/15195/enhanced-controls-for-low-voltage-halogen-lighting-dimming.html# Good reading for anyone who ever wondered what the difference is between cheap ELV transformers and expensive ones...

Water only hot when heating is on!

Just tried it! All the pipes are cold except for the hot water flow (2nd pipe in from the left) which is luke warm.

Water only hot when heating is on!

Hi, Had a Worcester 24CDi fitted recently to a 3 bed semi (with electric shower so no huge demands on hot water needed). The central heating runs just fine but the hot water only runs hot properly if the heating is on. If I run a hot water tap when the heating isn't on, although the boiler...

Tiling over floor with damp ingress

I think the damp is coming up from the ground to be honest and I think this is why there's holes or slots made into the brick. The holes are slots and water tends to pool in them from what I remember when the door frame hadn't been fitted. I don't know what you mean about bridging - there's no...

    Bricks letting in damp?

I posted a question in the flooring section as I'm tiling my kitchen floor and needed to know what to do about tiling over bricks that get damp. I've noticed that outside the bricks have holes in them as though they're either vents or channels. This picture shows them, you can see the holes just...

Tiling over floor with damp ingress

Thanks for looking masona! The following picture is outside, directly under the French doors. They were put in where a window was previously. Notice the holes/slots at the top of the brick. I have no idea what they are for, but I seem to remember that the slots ran into the brick and...

Tiling over floor with damp ingress

I'm tiling my kitchen floor and where the French doors are, there's a course of bricks where it meets up with the concrete floor. In a few areas, water soaks up into the bricks as this picture shows: There was a piece of DPC covering the bricks, and running underneath the French doors...

Cutting hole for 40mm waste outlet

Damn! I assumed it was 40mm outside. Guess I'll get the next size up and use the 40mm for any smaller pipes.

Cutting hole for 40mm waste outlet

I've just ordered a 40mm TCT core drill from Toolstation complete with pilot and arbor, all for around a tenner though an extension bar added a bit more to it ;) I'll be careful with the drill - it's got a clutch so it should be fine.

Cutting hole for 40mm waste outlet

Hi, I have 3 holes to cut for waste pipes in my kitchen. Can anyone suggest the best/most practical way of doing this? Do I need to buy a core bit? It's just that the wall is 9 inch thick double brick... Thanks for looking :)

Halogen downlight with dimmer. Low or Main voltage?

I've got mains (GU10) lighting in my kitchen and ELV (12v) in my bathroom. To be honest, I can't see any difference in the "quality" of the light. The practical differences as far as I'm concerned, is that I'd rather use ELV lighting in a "higher-risk" area like the bathroom, though I accept...

    Routing pipes behind kitchen cabinets

I need to route a hot water pipe and cold water pipe along my kitchen wall and I have to then mount my base units to the same wall. I assume this is common practice, but can I pretty much route the pipes where I want or should I have them routed as close to the floor as possible? I'm just...

Hanging a radiator on a thermalite wall

Hi, I've got a radiator I need to hang. It's a double rad, 620x1400 so it's quite heavy and the problem is that one of the radiator brackets will have to be mounted on a wall which is plasterboard on thermalite (the other part of the wall is brick). Can anyone suggest what I should use to...

    Depth of cable

I've just done a load of this, and the best advice I got (from this site) was to use plasterer's bonding (adhesive for dot & dabbing), to bury the cables before having the plasterer do his thing. I'd always tried to use filler before (!)
