Need creative solution for lifting goods

Also, for heavy loads, a block and tackle is a mechanical equivalent of a lot of pulleys geared together; you pull fast, it lifts slowly, but the weight can be considerable (tons, even)

Any device to smooth voltage dips on lighting/stop flicker?

I don't know, as I have no standard lamps. I'll get one and see. Megaman dim to warm dimmable LED 240v gu10, driven by a fibaro dimmer2 leading edge dimmer. How it does its dimming, not sure. The radial is wired in 1.5 mm2, 6a BG RCBO, CU is brand new too, as are the meters, service head etc...

Need creative solution for lifting goods

If you buy two pulleys, loop the rope over the ceiling one, then round the floor (the goods end) and then attach the rope end to the ceiling again, you can lift twice the weight you could before, though you have to pull more rope

Any device to smooth voltage dips on lighting/stop flicker?

i live fairly rurally and occasionally suffer a problem where the lighting flickers quite a lot in the evening. I'm not certain but suspect it may be due to fluctuations in the supply voltage or by devices in the house turning on and off; perhaps one of the neighbours on the same phase has a...

    Smart light switches

Best is a subjective term with home automation, but I'm very happy with my Fibaro system of dimmer modules. They accept commands from normal light switches, so grandma can turn the lights on. They accept commands via a webpage, so any kind of browser can turn the lights on. They accept commands...

Perhaps we should have an interesting DIY injuries section?

The most serious injury I picked up building my current house was using a sliding compound mitre saw.. I'd brought the blade down with the saw slid forward, but needed to pull it backwards slightly to finish this particular cut (it couldn't be done the other way round. I wasn't quite looking at...

    Starting over

the building site I'm looking to landscape has, I assume, reasonable topsoil on already; it's certainly well covered with grass, brambles and other vegetation. There is quite bit of work to do with levels, a terracing to install, hardcore to be laid for driveway and paths etc. I assume that I...

    french wiring

Hi wannabeDIY, if you have a copy of the file, could you also send it to me? I'll arrange some permanent hosting that isn't going to exipire unlike those temporary file sharing services, thanks!

34 Piece VDE Electrical Kit for £30 - Good deal?

Not true; pz bit heads do not fit all the way into ph screws, and this overloads the point of the bit. It might work for a while in low torque applications like electrical screws, but anything else and you'll be looking at a snapped bit or rounded out/chewed screw in no time. Just use the...

34 Piece VDE Electrical Kit for £30 - Good deal?

I disagree.. I'd hand you my impact driver, a box of 100mm PZ2 screws and a box of PH2 bits and see how many screws/bits were knackered at the end of fitting out e.g. A load of ceiling joists, but it'd be an expensive experiment compared to using the right tool for the job. I understand your...

34 Piece VDE Electrical Kit for £30 - Good deal?

Couple of ways round that (angle grinder them off/tape up then use a bit of finger pressure to stop it slipping, if it bothers you), but I figure that it doesn't matter overly much because it doesn't break through it, and any marked insulation is going to be inside an enclosure in a context...

34 Piece VDE Electrical Kit for £30 - Good deal?

BAS, these would be better in 99% of cases: , and in the other 1%, adjusting your version would be a tolerable inconvenience. I have a pair of these, but truth be told I prefer the pair i got from Aldi; identical in all but name but having rubberised handles, theyre nicer to use than the...

When to strip outer grey insulation off 2.5mm twin & earth.

Your wife might have thought so, but mine just couldn't decide where the accessories were to go, so I found sticking 2 feet in each time was a better strategy..

    A low voltage/RS232 type question

+1, found a break in one of the cores of the supplied cable. A new plug on it and we're away! endecot; was it me you were requesting a photo from?

34 Piece VDE Electrical Kit for £30 - Good deal?

And even then, you really need both PH and PZ style + shaped drivers, as well as a good selection of flatties. Do the watchmaker's screwdrivers count?

    Cable stapler

Bought an Arrow T72 when doing my most recent build; it's more targeted at electricity cables (e.g. 2.5mm T&E) rather than phone ones like the stanley. At first the pro electrician who was supervising scoffed, but the number of times he asked to borrow it for fixing something in an awkward place...

AppleTV - worth it? Getting one jailbroken?

And I've got 3 vehicles that I plan to take for MOT; I'm sure you'd be delighted to spend an hour of your time looking them over and issuing certs before letting me drive them away without paying you. That's sure to keep your electricity bill paid so you can carry on watching your bootlegged TV...

AppleTV - worth it? Getting one jailbroken?

I caught it, but I thought it was a fallacious and moronic way of presenting the argument so I didn't chase it out. However, at your insistence: You seem to be asserting that Google, while doing nothing illegal, are acting immorally/are in the wrong. Similarly, I've never actually accused you...

    A low voltage/RS232 type question

I have a ventilation system in the loft, that came with a wired controller; a display and couple of buttons about the size of a light switch. It also had bundled with it approximately 10 metres of telephone cable terminated in a 4P4C connector at one end (intended to plug into the ventilation...

AppleTV - worth it? Getting one jailbroken?

So you should too. Without their efforts your fat arse would have no couch to sit on, no TV to show anything, nothing to stream onto it, no connection to stream it over Oh, grow up. "I feel it's perfectly ok to rip some movie studio off for a few dollars on their epic work, because big bad...
