    Sign off problem

Hi, 7671 is the reference for the British Standard referring to wiring regs. The forms templates that IET provided to sit alongside work carried out in accordance with the wiring regs are: Electrical Installation Certificate Electrical Installation Certificate Minor Works Electrical...

    Loft light dependant on hallway

I did exactly this for pretty much the same reason. You can turn the loft light off/on independently in the loft, but it is only supplied with power when the landing light is on so you always have light when going up or more importantly when coming down the ladder.

    Installation Design Documents

I've got the blue one................ I'm guessing I need the brown one. And that's not a phrase I've often said. Just my luck. Cheers Lee

    Installation Design Documents

Thanks John. I’ve got the on site guide and the regs although not sure I’ve got all the addendums. Will wait to see what they come back with. Programme of works is in my head so better write that down.

    Installation Design Documents

Morning All, Understanding that BCO's can vary wildly between local authorities, can anyone give some pointers on what they're likely to want to see at the design stage please. I've reached out to my Local Authority BCO to ascertain what they would want to see but would like to prepare myself...

    What is the best router?

What wifi standard are your end points? What type of internet connection do you have? How many concurrent users are you anticipating? Do you need any wired connections? What size property are you looking to serve? The guest network is available on pretty much all routers these days so it's less...

How to activate isolation on this smart meter.

Ahh well you see, wouldn't NICEIC deem us both incompetent to wire a 3 pin plug? I'm qualified to wire a 50 way Amphenol though, but those 3 pins can be proper fiddly.

How to activate isolation on this smart meter.

Thanks for the reply John. I've just been looking through the literature for the meter, and although it states the whole 100Amp Breaker to connect/disconnect. When reading the applicable standards from the meter literature, none of them appear in the 18th Chapter 53. I'll get one installed...

How to activate isolation on this smart meter.

Skilled person (electrically). - Person who possesses, as appropriate to the nature of the electrical work to be undertaken, adequate education, training and practical skills, and who is able to perceive risks and avoid hazards which electricity can create. I'm definitely that, however I'm...

How to activate isolation on this smart meter.

Don't sweat it. I'm not at all tetchy about anyone or anything said in this forum. I just get tired of being mugged off by big organisations and the general approach of 'you're all a bit too stoopid to understand/deal with this' whilst appreciating things have to be aligned with the lowest...

How to activate isolation on this smart meter.

Yep I did spot the semantics around 'connect/disconnect' and the exclusion of isolate. Then again when I disconnect the cut out fuse, isn't the system isolated?................................... Harry, yep controllable remotely by the supplier and one of the two means of disconnecting or...

How to activate isolation on this smart meter.

Extract from the documentation for this Smart Meter. 'The SGM1400-B has been designed to offer flexibility and the choice of home area network (HAN) and wide area network (WAN) communications. As standard, the SGM1400-B supports different AMI technologies, including the UK CSP communications...

How to activate isolation on this smart meter.

Prior to a consumer unit replacement for example. As there is no intermediate isolator between the meter and the CU where is the safe isolation point to allow disconnection/connection of the tails? Only answer is removal of the Cut Out fuse, which can be done with DNO approval but which as...

How to activate isolation on this smart meter.

Hi John, No it was never my intention to use it as a safe means of isolation. I’d pull the cut out fuse before relying on it. What interested me was I suppose the implementation by the suppliers who must be using this software driven device as a ‘safety’ device to isolate systems prior to work...

How to activate isolation on this smart meter.

I was going to put something about the safest way to remove a cut out fuse is under no load conditions, but smart/stupid meters are still going to present a minor load anyway, so it’s not a unique smart meter problem. Although removing the cut out does risk the smart meter firmware and possibly...

How to activate isolation on this smart meter.

I agree with the regulation entirely and I’m fiercely agreeing with you that physical isolation is the only truly safe means of doing this. What occurs to me is that the era of smart meters has introduced a situation where the supplier can deactivate a circuit using software, such a circuit at...

How to activate isolation on this smart meter.

Can you expand on that a little? Isn't this exactly the technology that's built into smart meters? Or is whatever regulation that calls that up not applicable to the supply side? Applying a bit of consideration to things, in the event the provider disconnects you then your entire installation...

    Fluorescent tube replacement

Have you tried taking the tube down and give it a really good stroking? (cleaning) I don't know who it was that first suggested this to me due to slow starting but he was definitely in tweed and smoking a pipe. Bad starter in my experience usually manifests itself as multiple attempts to setup...

How to activate isolation on this smart meter.

Evening both. Yeah there is an isolator in the CU, but it's a 30 year old Hager board with Cartridge style fuses which really needs an update so a full Hager RCBO board is going in. It's not only being replaced due to age it's being replaced due to additional circuits being required for a...

How to activate isolation on this smart meter.

I’d rather have a standard meter but it’s a property I’m buying and it’s already installed. Guess I’ll pay the £140 for an isolator to be fitted.
