Want a megaflow - can my old oil heater be a primary heat source?

Folks, I have a 22 year old oil boiler supplying CH and HW. I will be installing a large pv solar setup and I want to use excess to heat water. I was eyeing a 200L megaflow. Can the old, perfectly functional boiler, be used as primary or do I need to increase budget by £7.5k in budget :( C C

Best option for outdoor fused isolator?

thanks all. @ericmark that is a nice option. I could try that. I've retraced the cable and I think I might know where it's being spliced in - the storage space under the stairs is a possibility. Seeing as it's SWAMBO's storage space I need caving gear to get in there and search. Pretty sure the...

Best option for outdoor fused isolator?

Folks, I investigated the mess of wires for the outdoor lighting today. In essence there is a 2.5mm (spur I hope) coming through the wall (exact source unknown) and feeding various outdoor switches and lights via 1.5 (both "pond cable" and armoured). I don't like that it's on one of the...

Best plants which use a lot of water

Hi folks, I have a septic system which discharges to the bottom of my garden into a soak-away. The ground is quite damp as a result. During the rainy times it pools too. What can I plant there which uses a lot of water? It's a far and obscure part of the garden so not worried about...

    Solar Panels

    Seems a G99 is :) G99 Type-A would be required.

    Solar Panels

My understanding - while not exactly exhaustive - is that a G9 is if you are going to feed back into the grid. My system will, by day, charge the batteries, run the house and has it has a sensor on the incomer, try and maintain that at zero - i.e. not feed back into the grid. I understand then...

    Solar Panels

Batteries, the li ion ones, are good for 10 years. The only cost £1000 / 2.4kw/h so not terrible when you consider the cost of electricity. In 10 years time they'll undoubtedly be cheaper. Cleaning the panels, for the last 12 years I got a hose, broom and once a summer, cleaned them.

    Solar Panels

I'm embarking on this same project - for the second time. You mean 5KW or 5000W - not 5000KW :) Yours would work but you would never see the full potential of the inverter. It would still be ok thoug. 12*325 = 3900W 14*325 = 4550W Adding more improves cloudy days ability to generate and...

40W drawn on lighting circuit even when everything is off

loving the debating over tong/clamp tester. If it helps I've heard of both, interchangeable of the names, and I'm not even a sparky  ok, so I turned the mcb off and walked around the house and notice nothing untoward. What is interesting though - see below - is that I put a split-core CT...

40W drawn on lighting circuit even when everything is off

Folks, I noticed - with a tong tester - that one of my lighting circuits is drawing a steady 40W. When I turn the breaker off it stops. For the life of me I cannot find any light turned on or bathroom fan on. There are two 1.5mm wires going into the A mcb. No smart or dimmer switches. I care...

    Wooden fence posts near soakaways

Evening folks, I am planning on building a 12 panel solar stand at the bottom of the garden using 100x100 x 2.7 treated posts. I have 3 septic tanks in the neighbour's garden which then discharge along the bottom of mine with through a series of pipes and 3 soakaways the final 4th soakaway...

Radial Circuit in Garage - Change to Ring?

I don't think this one does. It's a laboured start for sure. After the first compression (I assume) it spins freely but there is effort there. I will check again over the weekend. Link

21 year old oil boiler vs lpg installation

thanks. Not in a hurry to replace it - I met the chap who's been maintaining it since 2000 and he said it's like Trigger's broom. Only the shell is original :D The tank is still in good nick it seems. It's painted and no obvious sings of rust so all good I assume. I was only musing as when...

21 year old oil boiler vs lpg installation

Folks, I've just moved into a house with a single walled steel oil tank - around 3KL I believe - and a very well maintained 21 year old oil boiler. Annual service, inured and lots of parts replaced as they wear. At some point it'll fail beyond economical repair (as my well maintained 21 year...

Radial Circuit in Garage - Change to Ring?

Yes, direct buried. He drives an old mondeo... Sorry, wrong group. Normal single phase into house, then through 40A mcb into garage cu. Yes but I suspect its fed from blue plastic pipe from house. Not metal all the way. The tap goes into poured concrete so cannot tell how much is actually in...

Radial Circuit in Garage - Change to Ring?

Garage is fed from house, 6mm buried armoured. Mcb in house is 42A and feeds a CU with earth leakage device. As for is this enough? Unless I am welding, the 2.5hp compressor kicks in and I've all the heaters on and the electric car (which I don't even own) is being charged on the charge point...

Radial Circuit in Garage - Change to Ring?

I guess my statement on "can it be 20/25A" meant "on existing 2.5mm". I thought a ring was required to allow for higher loads (up to 32A) on 2.5mm as larger becomes expensive / cumbersome. Totally appreciate that it could just be a radial (as in, open ended). So it's ok then to a another...
