Changing old round pin socket for modern one?

To be honest, because it's only going to be used for a desk lamp and because we've got the modern 13A socket on the same wall for anything else, I've ordered this unswitched 5A round pin socket and I'll just wire a round pin plug to the table lamp we will be using...

Changing old round pin socket for modern one?

Great, that's what I'll do. The socket is in a wee alcove in the bedroom which is the perfect size for a desk, so a small lamp was what was going to go on it anyway. Thanks for taking the time to reply, much appreciated. Steve

Changing old round pin socket for modern one?

Removing the fuse that kills the upstairs lights switches the round pin socket off (the socket is in an upstairs bedroom). So I'm guessing it is wired to that circuit (5A fuse in the fusebox). I'm guessing that the advice will be that it cannot therefore be swapped out to a modern socket? If...

Changing old round pin socket for modern one?

So, wired the old round pin plug to a lamp. The lamp turns on and off as you would expect it to from the socket but turning the ceiling lights on and off has no effect on it so it does not seem to be on the lighting circuit.

Changing old round pin socket for modern one?

Thanks, make sense and I can do that. If the lamp does switch on and off with the ceiling light switch, what then? Can I swap it out for a modern socket?

Changing old round pin socket for modern one?

Hi, we have for some reason I cannot fathom, just the one round pin socket in an upstairs bedroom which we've never used in the 20 years we've lived here (the socket, not the bedroom!). All the other sockets in the house are modern ones, including the one in the attached picture below the round...

Conservatory heat problems ? window film?

Daughter and her partner have just had a rep from this company round and seem keen to go with it, any thoughts? Seems to be quilted aluminium foil sheets on the inside (!) of the windows held in place by tongue and groove upvc boards cut to size, reviews seem okay but I'm not convinced given...

Conservatory heat problems ? window film?

Weirdly that's along the lines of what I'm thinking now. Not a dust sheet but if there was a big sheet of reflective material, a bit like what you use on car windscreens that could be attached via hooks in the brickwork on the house just above the conservatory and then again at the far end of...

Conservatory heat problems ? window film?

Sorry, should have been clearer, the roof is polycarbonate and it's just the roof we were hoping to do something with.

Conservatory heat problems ? window film?

Hi, hope this is in the correct forum for this question (mods feel free to move) Despite the fact that we live in Scotland, my daughters south facing conservatory is way too hot during the summer (a common problem I know). Winters are fine because she has a log burner in there now but we were...

PIR sensor in security light keeps triggering...help!

Bit tricky this since it's not my property but, if it is a duff sensor would there be any problem asking my neighbour to switch off power to his house mains, me disconnecting the sensor and terminating the live and neutral feeds in a connector block in the recess then just screwing the now...

PIR sensor in security light keeps triggering...help!

Hi My neighbour has a security light triggered by a PIR sensor (one of those round ones with a round plastic lens in the middle). It's located under the soffits at the side of his house and (you know what's coming next) it keeps triggering particularly when there's any wind and the light shines...

    Switched fuse spurs in conservatory...why?

Have to agree, she may well have one or two fitted at some point in the future so at least hopefully fitting should be easy enough with the pre-existing switches and hopefully some wiring.

    Switched fuse spurs in conservatory...why?

Just above the skirting, each just few inches along from one of the 2 gang plug sockets, and at the same height. Both FCUs on different walls

    Switched fuse spurs in conservatory...why?

In one spur 2 red live wires going to Live 'In' and 2 black neutral going to Neutral 'In' (nothing in the 2 'out' terminals). In the other, 3 live into Live 'In' and 3 neutral into neutral 'In' (again nothing in the 2 out terminals). Obviously both are earthed and there are no other sockets...

    Switched fuse spurs in conservatory...why?

Hi (pure curiosity alert!) My daughter has a semi-detached house built about 20 years ago with a conservatory added about 10 years back. There are 4 x 2-gang plug sockets in there along with one wall light and 2 switched fuse spurs. I've just been putting in new shiny sockets as part of...

renovating a wooden coffee table, advice please?

Hi I'm working on a coffee table for my daughter. It had some kind of ugly composite middle which I've managed to cut out and as you can see from the attached pic I'm left with a hollow frame. My plan is to fix some kind of wooden backing to the underside of the table, build it up a little then...
