Sub-standard service from DIY & Hire Shops

I've had pretty decent service from hire companies. Only thing that bugs me is the random pricing and "discounts". That said I'd still rather buy the tool new or second hand. Better than wasting time driving around and handy when you need an extra day or split a job over a few weekends. You can...

    Makita Drill Keeps Sticking

I think it was an attempt at humour that failed (not helped by a typo) I'd start with some silicone spray. Often frees up these sort of things. Easy to try and won't hurt. After that you are into opening it up. The switch can buy bought separately and is pretty easy to replace if all else...

Problem with Makita 18v Cordless drill

The FET isn't a sensor its a transistor which does the speed control. Could be that or maybe the switch. The fet gets a variable voltage in from the switch and high power connection to the brushes. Should be able to check it with a meter. That said you can buy a whole be bare drill for around...

Do you need a whacker for sub base?

I did my shed base with a sledgehammer. Much smaller area and that was really hard work. I hired a whacker for the garage. Really easy and did a much better job. Got a deal booking it online and it was £15 iirc. Well worth it

    UPVC Door - Gloucester Area

Can't give you a recommendation, but can give you one to avoid. Diamond Cut Glass in Gloucester. The windows we had were terrible quality. The sealing failed very quickly and they didn't want know and were completely unwilling to do anything about it.

Getting a rounded off screw out

Yes. Your tool sounds like my old one. The disks were small and brittle. So small you couldn't really get a good angle to cut and so brittle it was 50\50 they'd last the cut. These dremel ones are great. I've cut some pretty big bolts with them, even cut some bits of old car for welding where I...

Getting a rounded off screw out

The dremel 456 EZ cutting disks will cut any steel They are basically mini angle grinder disks. You will need eye protection. There is very little force so its easy to hold steady. Rest your hand on the wood and slowly lower the tool. Go slow to make a neat slot. Also works for paint filled...

Would you buy building supplies on eBay?

Bought loads of mine on eBay. You can still reject it if the quality isn't as described. Usually its in good condition

Snooker shed and Art studio shed.. will I need planning?

Technically it needs building regs and planning. If it is round the back an the neighbours won't complain then you could take a risk and do it without. A third option is to apply for planning, make a start, lay the slab and build the walls, then build the roof to 3m if you get planning, 2.5m if...

    Electricity, garage en bloc

If it is just to run the display and sensors then the gym equipment may already be 12v and will happily run from a car or leisure battery. Even if its mains only a small invertor may be enough. They are pretty cheap now. Have a look for the power ratings. LED lighting is easy to run from a...

    LED strip/tape lights

TLC will sell you a kit that'll just plug in but you are paying quite a premium for components that can easily be bought separately.

    Buying more garden?

Just to add, why can't it be built on? If its an acre then it would be worth knocking down one of the adjacent houses to put access in. That would up the value to 00000s maybe even over a million in some parts of the country.

    Buying more garden?

There shouldn't be any tax charges unless we are talking about a substantial piece of land. Good point above regarding access, make sure it directly connects to your land. I'd look up the current title on the land registry website. Go to the proper land registry website rather than a third...

    mini blow torch

I've had a couple of the cheap Chinese ones that screw onto camping gas style cans and they've been fine. Still going strong. There's not much too them so not much to go wrong. Only issue is you can't use them upside down until the nozzle has warmed up. Not a big deal. Might also be worth...

700mm wide shower area (shower tray)

700 square would be a bit snug but as you are going much bigger in the other dimension I think it will be fine. If you really want 800 (which is far more common) could you step down the tiled bit by the door?

Easiest way to fill electrical chases?

+1 for easifil. Good stuff, easy to use. For a chase I would fill to a couple of mm below the surface then go over it again with a final skim. The key to a good finish is timing the sanding. Just after sets but before it gets too hard. Then it is a couple of quick wipes with the sand paper. They...

    Garage roof (flat)

Bedding in cement doesn't stick them down. There isn't any significant adhesion between wood and mortar. A mortar bed will block air gaps and give better support so is worth doing but its the wall straps that hold it down

    Garage roof (flat)

6x2 is a bit undersized for a 4m span, 8x2 would be better. That said you'll probably get away with it for a garage. Notching at the ends is fine. The maximum bending is in the middle (don't notch it there).
