Hot hot hot start early, finish early.

Im stripping a pan tile roof on a listed building (1750) and im getting covered in black dust which in turn sticks to the sweat. Im coming home looking like a minstrel every day...

    Type of Tiles

Most roofing merchants will get one made up for you out of the actual tiles on your roof, just take down a sample and they send them off and are back a couple of days later.

    Replacing and modifying extension roof

Looks like you already have it sussed out , thats how it should be done . Just make sure your lead is covering 150mm down from the top of the tile and going up under the mono ridge 150mm too. Dont forget to put a rubber washer behind your screw when you fix the monoridge.

Cost of replacing Soffits, Facias and Bargeboards

I agree with Cumbrianroofer, quality comes first. upvc fascias are easy to make look good from the ground but there is more to it than just nailing on a bit of plastic. Ensure you are getting a good quality non fade plastic used and make sure the felt is replaced at eaves with new comb...

    Leak in the roof

Its going to be pretty hard to say what it is without a photo but yes there is a problem with the tiling somewhere. Could be something as simple as a broken/slipped tile or it could be something a little more complicated such as a valley or flashing problem. The felting should be fixed at...

12 year old failing slate roof

Sounds like the roof has been laid using economy spanish slate or brazilian slate which do have a tendency to break unexpectedly after being laid. Just replace what is broken at the minute and expect the odd broken one here and there over time. If this is the case then it will not be whole...

    Repairing valley gutter

It is possible to use epdm but in my opinion i would replace with code 5 lead especially if the gutter is visible as epdm looks horrible when it gets warm(goes all wrinkly). Also when i do a valley gutter i like to dress the hidden edges up over a piece of a angle fillet to create a ridge to...

the best replacement for felt roofing and price guidance?

Looks like this has been done on the cheap once apon a time, but the condition of the felting (from the photo) looks ok If it was my roof i would want the dormers capped with lead, the pitched area of roof in slate. The flat top area is fine in felt but could do with some walkway tiles or...

Do I really need a roof coating?

To the original poster and any other homeowners reading this. DO NOT COAT, PAINT OR SEAL YOUR ROOF EVER. If you have a bad roof, repair it or reroof it, do not be tempted by one of these cowboy contractors. I have just stripped off and reroofed a plain tile roof in maldon , essex which...

Approximate cost of a new slate roof

I am very reasonable with my rates so perhaps i am a little under what other people may charge (work from home, no vat registration and no employees)

Approximate cost of a new slate roof

If the slates are just slipping , why not get them relaid? New spanish slate does not look as nice as what you have on there and are more prone to fracture. And for £38,900 + vat i would expect slates made of gold.

Approximate cost of a new slate roof

Obviously prices vary from area to area but if that house was in suffolk for the complete job in new slates and everything as per quotation i would charge 7500-8k. I would ask why you are changing the existing roof covering, are the tiles / slates knackered? Also not liking the sound of...

    MDF fascia boards

MDF fascias  Thats a new one!! Sounds worth a quote for full replacement upvc though, could be a nice job. I was up on a new extention tuesday which cost 40k investigating a leak in the valley after the builders had done a bunk. I was rather suprised to find a 12 inch strip...

Code of lead for bay roof

Should really be code 5 minimum or ideally 6. Expect it to split in about 15-20 years from movement of the lead expanding and contracting. Hopefully he has done it in two sections or it could have even less of a lifespan!

    Seal unused roof vent

I would do as cumbrianroofer says and take it out, shortcuts only lead to future problems, especially were mastic is concerned. Perhaps you could slip a little piece of lead up under the flashing where it is cut out and fold it over the top of tiles underneath to hold it in place ? If you...

Marley Roof Tile Discoloration - 5 yr old home

Apparently the tiles themselves can leak efflorescence according to the manufacturer, sounds like this is your problem http://www.claytiles.co.uk/downloadfile.php?DataSchemeID=3&BLOBID=87&PHPSESSID=c7a5b91120c251b97f5209a2a398af84

Roof looks awful since Velux fitted.

Sounds like the tiles are kicking up at the sides of the velux, this would give a 'sweeping' effect between the two windows Builder probably hasnt removed the nib off the back of the tile where it sits over the flashing kit or hasnt trimmed down the foam .
