    Sleeves for Concrete (Fencing)

I'm wanting the fence holes to be circular from top to bottom and to do that I finally got myself some 200mm diameter flue tubing. I've cut the holes square, I'll place the sleeve in the hole and backfill around the sleeve. Then, I'll gently pull out the sleeve hoping that the circular hole...

    Sleeves for Concrete (Fencing)

Hi. I decided that I'd place my fence posts inside sleeves, then fill with concrete / Postcrete. If I buy 200mm diameter tubing, that is made of 3mm thick cardboard, I'd be paying about £12, each for my sleeves (not incl. postage). That's £60 for 5 posts + postage on top. I may be able to use...

Crack in garden wall after about 8 months

The wall is 226Cm high from the foundation, which on my side protrudes above ground about 10Cm. The bottom 90cm is retaining and the width is the width of a block. On top of that, the same blocks, but the width is the depth of a block (i.e. smaller). There are no buttresses or whaever on my...

Crack in garden wall after about 8 months

OK, so it's not that the foundation is sinking down at one end (say) it's just material shrinkage. The wall is actually 47 feet long (abt. 14 meters) with no movement joint. Would this wall benefit from being cut in the middle to create an expansion joint? Or, would you not bother?

Crack in garden wall after about 8 months

Hi. At the back of my garden, my neighbour had put up a wall made of largish blocks. They look grey and are like the size of the old breezeblocks. It's actually a retaining wall, (holding back about 90 Cm high soil) of two parts. The bottom part the blocks are arranged such that the width of the...

What to use for capping a border/barrier made of regular flags

Hi. Between my property and next doors, I've erected a barrier made of regular flags, The flags stand proud of the soil about 300m, 300mm being below the surface. I'd like to cap the top of the line of flags, so that they tend to remain in line. The flags are 48mm thick. My first thoughts are to...

Should the neon indicator on a shower switch indicate power to the shower?

When the council electrician came today to re-wire the switch, he asked me which is source. I said I think it's at the bottom, that is, I thought power came up from the floorboards, thru the switch, then into the loft to the shower. But, it seems it's the opposite, source comes into the switch...

Should the neon indicator on a shower switch indicate power to the shower?

Hi. The shower switch I have has a neon light indicator. It always remains on, no matter the switch position. This tells me the indicator is showing power to the switch & not to the shower. Is this correct, is that what the indicator is for? Thanks.

    Certificate in Electrical Installation Work

I over worry sometimes over the council coming and doing work & billing me a ridiculous charge. That's why I'm often banging on about the idea doing my own work, which then leads to talk involving subjects such as what is notifiable, testing, certification, whatever. Well, to day the...

    Certificate in Electrical Installation Work

Yes, that's it: It's down to work is notifiable or not. I'll have to find out and what the council says. OK, so what I am getting is that when I notify the council, they may take note that I did an electrical and installation course. And it's up to me to get test gear and know how to test if I...

    Certificate in Electrical Installation Work

Hi. It's a long time since I started this thread. Does the fact that I took a course in Electrical Installation & Maintenance, give me any heightened "right", permission or privilege to disconnect and then reconnect a shower switch? In the circumstances where I'm a tenant in a council house...

Are fixing holes on a patress subject to a standard placing?

Hi. I went to B&Q (first shop I went to) and bought a deep pattress that fits the switch faceplate. The faceplate is exactly as wide as the pattress, but is 1mm or less short in the length at either side, but there is no daylight between the pattress and the switch plate. So, I'm figuring to use...

Are fixing holes on a patress subject to a standard placing?

Oh, if there is no standard, then I'm just going to have to take the switch plate and at the shop see whther I can find a patress that fits. I guess I'm hopeful.

Are fixing holes on a patress subject to a standard placing?

Hi. The patress for the shower switch was smashed, but the switch plate itself is OK. The switch itself in made by Scolmore, Click brand I think. SW34511D-14B.E. But the patress is made by Legrand. 7364 11 15W50. So, the switch has an aspect ratio of roughly 2:1. (145mm x 85mm)...

Trench for foundations for a retaining wall: Need to be cut below the surface?

What I have done is contact the case worker in local council planning, dealing with the building application. The application does not mention a retaining wall, only construction work related to the house on the property. Like this wall is the biggest safety issue, but it's not officially on the...

Trench for foundations for a retaining wall: Need to be cut below the surface?

Hi. Is it a requrement that the trench for concrete foundations, for a retaining wall, needs to be cut below the ground surface? I mean the lower ground surface. A retaining wall that might be 8 foot high from my side is going to be built by my neighbour, but the bottom of the foundations...

    Acrylic paint: All the same?

Hi. I'm wanting to paint over the cardboard covers of my lever arch files with acrylic paint. I can get two canisters of Reeeves acrylic paint for about £16, which is one liters worth. of paint. Reeves paint will be sold as artists paint. Do I have a cheaper alternative, perhaps acryic paint...
