    Is this wiring acceptable?

Are you saying there is only 1 cable attached to the switch? and yes this is a P8ss poor job

    New circuit

I think the sparkie will sign this off and certify for a small fee on the assumption that 1. There is rcd protection for the circuit. 2. No plastering has taken place and the floor boards are still loose s the full cable route can be verified 3. The sparky fits the mcb and terminates the...

    Oven tripping RCD

Easy to assume the RCD is faultless. 3 months ago had an RCD that was tripping every hour or so. It was on a new board that had only been installed for a matter of weeks and had been tested. It tripped on both 1/2 times tests, so yes RCD's do fail

    Jablite and cables

Thanks for your input fellas. More info for you. It is a very narrow galley kitchen tacked onto the back of the house. Probably 150 years old. The builder proposes 1" jablite between battens and then a vapour barrier with plasterboard on top. The outside is currently rendered finish, then...

    Jablite and cables

Kitchen area of house is single skin and will be battened and boarded with jablite as the insulation. New kitchen ring to be installed. Is 'Jablite' a proprietary name for polystyrene? Am worried about leeching of plasticiser...any advice? Anyone know the properties of Jablite?

How old would you estimate my CU is?

That's my personal opinion. At least an RCD covers any fault to earth. How can any say that box is safe just because no fuses blow? Let's be honest how many people ever bother to have their electrics tested. Now we have a cheap piece of technology its right to use it. The answer like a previous...

How old would you estimate my CU is?

A fuse not blowing for years is no guarantee of safety. In fact a blown fuse will indicate a good path to earth should any appliance become faulty. Visual means nothing and the only way to tell the earth is continuous is with a loop test. Personally I wouldn't live in a house without RCD/RCBO...

    Fluke 1653 Error 5

My KT64 has a display symbol 'noise'. The manual states that when doing EFLI testing and this displays you can get a reading by turning off ATT (anti trip technology). ATT is to stop RCD trip during test. Not sure if Fluke has this feature?

    SELV testing

Scenario: You are doing an inspection and test and you there is ELV wiring. The transformer is labelled SELV. Can you tell me the correct way to IR test. Is it 250 or 500 applied between the conductors of both circuits with the transformer disconnected, OR is it just 250 between the terminals of...

    8.5 kW Shower

What about laying the cable on top of the insulation and clearing it around the entry exit point so the cable does not need derating?

different sized cable for electric shower

IF................... The existing cable is undamaged and is buried in plaster, runs in voids, and is not covered enclosed on its run with any insulation(ie rockwool or similar) why change any of it? Use a 40amp mcb and an 8.5kw shower which is adequate. They give a good flow rate and you are...

    9.5 kW Shower

6mm2 cable can provide upto 47amps depending on installation. More info needed from OP as to the actual route this cable takes(ie what materials does it pass through?). Also what type of breaker does it have, is it a rewireable fuse or an mcb?

    RCD tripping

An RCD trips only with a fault to earth. I suspect what happened is that the trapped twig caused overload on your motor and tripped your mcb/fuse at the consumer unit, this in turn caused the RCD to appear tripped. If you had a permanent earth fault your RCD would not reset.

    lighting

Presume this this is extension of http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=143536 You hold the whip hand. Get the builder to get a real electrician in to sort out the mess. Or threaten him that you will get your own in and deduct the costs from his final account. The builder is...

    Induced voltage from underfloor heating?

Wonder if it is the condition 'perceived electric shock' as outlined on P65 of EGTTBR. This condition is found in TNCS installs and is caused by impedance of the PEN conductor causing a voltage above true earth. Does the installation have a higher than normal Ze? I would guess it is L to N...
