Best Tool to Rake Out a Joint

Personally I think you're making hard work for yourself. I'd simply Polysulphide over the crack

    Extension movement

Firstly you need to establish what category of cracking you have by measuring the cracks. BRE Digest 251 is the definitive guide for defining crack category and how serious they are. Category 0 & 1 would only be defined as decorative cracks. I've inserted a link to this document...

Blown Bricks - air brick required?

If you have voids that would allow you to install a couple of air bricks that would ventilate the hidden face of the brickwork then I would definitely do it.

Blown Bricks - air brick required?

Make sure you use a very stiff brush to keep brushing away salt efflorescence because this blocks the brick pores and again increases brick spalling due to hydraulic frost action.

Blown Bricks - air brick required?

what is the void to the steps filled with? We're obviously thinking along the same lines but I would have assumed that you don't have a hollow void? If you have then air bricks will help.

Blown Bricks - air brick required?

No, I can't see how that would benefit at all.

Blown Bricks - air brick required?

That sounds like a reasonable theory but you can't have possibly ensured the bricks were dry before you applied it and this is the problem, the moisture now becomes trapped in the brick and expedites freeze/thaw action. In any event you are failing to recognise that most of these products have...

    Writing Blog is My Hobbies

Yes, my understanding is that you start and make decent money from blogs with advertorials but they have to be incredibly popular with thousands of visitors per month.

Blown Bricks - air brick required?

No woody is right, and in fact applying a waterproof coating will make the problem worse since it will inhibit moisture evaporation from the bricks and cause further deterioration due to frost action.

    EWI trims - opinions wanted

You have bigger problems than the trims at the moment. Why are there no hammer fixings in the GEPS boards? I know of no BBA certified system that is simply glue fixed and structural adequacy is determined by the hammer fixings, the adhesive does not form part of those calculations. Ask what...

Dealing with damp in Victorian Terrace

Firstly, simply locate your internal stop cock and if it connected to an incoming polyethylene pipe then you've probably nothing to worry about. I know you show a steel entering the house but just double check in case this is an old redundant pipe.Steel pipe can corrode very quickly when laid in...

Re-pointing a 1900-built end terrace: Lime mortar or Cement/Lime mix?

You should be looking to pay no more than around £75 per square meter including access costs. I know this because I've just completed a tender exercise for an external lime render project.

    Cavity Wall Insulation

There are a few pre-qualifying factors before deciding whether you property is suitable for CWI. The property should have no pre-existing damp problems, it should not be in an exposed location and the cavity must be a minimum of 50mm wide. Avoid blown fibre at all costs if you decide to have it...

Re-pointing a 1900-built end terrace: Lime mortar or Cement/Lime mix?

Actually Stuart, in theory i agree, in practice I don't. You are absolutely right that lime takes longer to mix up but builders don't generally understand that and use it prematurely when it is not as workable as it should be. Part of reason they don't like using it is that they don't understand it.

Air bricks - solid floor, not cavity, no boiler - required?

Yes, because all condensation is caused by drying washing indoors. You can lose the air brick if you have no other gas appliances in the property with a supplementary air requirement. It's dangerous to simply say that you have a roomed sealed boiler therefore it's no longer...

Ventilation of shower / bathroom - what would you do?

Install a Vectaire MF100C centrifugal fan and avoid cheap axial fans. Also, and this is critical, get it wired to run continuously on trickle speed with the boost speed wired to the lighting circuit, running timers and humidistat switches are a complete waste of time and you want to be dealing...

Re-pointing a 1900-built end terrace: Lime mortar or Cement/Lime mix?

No, there is no point whatsoever in combining a cement/lime mix, doing this would destroy all the limes qualities. Builders don't like using lime mortar because it isn't as workable as sand and cement but there are builders who with experience, just shop around. In all likelihood, given the age...
