Query on timber sizing - and converting imperial to metric.

In that case, what about 47x47? The 63x38 has a surface area of 23.94 cm² and the 47x47 had an area of 22.09 cm². I'm just thinking the squarer profile would be easier to work with.

Query on timber sizing - and converting imperial to metric.

Which is kind of my point, if you ask for a size based on imperial measurements you could end up with the wrong size timber due to the different metric specifications. I suppose that is negated a little with PAR, PSE, CLS, &c... however it is still bloody confusing. In the building of a (very...

Query on timber sizing - and converting imperial to metric.

Could someone please explain timber size conversions in a way that I can understand? I am looking at possibly building a shed, a lot of people are recommending 3x2. When I go looking for 3x2 (which I presume is 3"x2") I find 63mm x 38mm - which is 2.5"x1.5". Is this what is meant by 3x2, or...

MDF carcasses to support fish tank.

My original idea was just to create a surround for the existing cabinets, but SWMBO decided against that. While I do have some say over the design regards what I physically can and cannot do, ATEOTD it is not my living room. I have been doing some thinking on this. My plan was to use...

MDF carcasses to support fish tank.

OK. The back panel was going to sit inside the 4 edges as opposed to on their edges as I felt this provided further resistance to the downward pressures and also helped to prevent the shell from tilting. I did a mock up of one design (all in 3/4" including shelves) in Google Sketchup, here...

MDF carcasses to support fish tank.

Hi. I'll start this with a little history. My mum currently has some generic plastic drawer units. On top of one of these she has placed a 40l fish tank . The fish tank is far too small for it inhabitants (4 fish, 3 of which are goldfish :!:). So she is getting a bigger tank...

Need to repair wooden facias of pre-fab concrete garage.

Well - spent the day at it - only done one end so far, and there are still some minor finishing touches to do. Its not perfect by any stretch of the imaginations, but it is a lot better than what it replaces. 45x90mm bottom chord/lintel 45x45mm top chord offcuts of each for the supports...

Looking to re-board my loft space

Time for another question... Up until now I was planning to join the new joists to the existing ones by using 100mm screws at a 45o angle, however... I was in I was in B&Q last night and stumbled across these... Abru Purlin Ties (L)162mm x (W)20mm x (H)20mm Right Hand - Left Hand...

Need to repair wooden facias of pre-fab concrete garage.

OK - I have been back in the garage and spent nearly 2 hours with a tape measure, bits of paper and a calculator. Whilst I agree 2 bits of 2x6 and the rest of 2x4 will be the best, it is not going to be practical for me to use these size timbers. Also, on closer inspection, the current 2x1...

Need to repair wooden facias of pre-fab concrete garage.

Ok I won't "wedge", but I was planning to prop all 4, because of the sag I need to get all the fixing points in the right place - as the ends of the "purlins" connect to the truss.

Need to repair wooden facias of pre-fab concrete garage.

There are 4 metal bars that run the length of the garage, I have measured the height of these elsewhere in the garage (where they are at the correct height) and plan to wedge a bit of 2x4 under each one to prop the roof - does that sound good enough? Fair enough - but I plan to drill out or...

Need to repair wooden facias of pre-fab concrete garage.

Cheers for that - I have gone and done a bit of measuring. The total length that the lintel/bottom chord needs to be is 9'6", I will need the inside one to be 9" shorter otherwise there will be a 2" unsupported overhang to the front. I will need to shape the ends as the far edges only give...

Need to repair wooden facias of pre-fab concrete garage.

Cheers for the reply. The garage was erected over 20 if not 25 years ago by the previous owners or on behalf of the previous owner by the company that supplied it. To be honest, the thing seems pretty stable. I will chuck a spirit level up against the walls, but they don't look out of...

Need to repair wooden facias of pre-fab concrete garage.

The ends of my garage were damage a little while back in storms, and while everything inside is still dry, the roof at one end is beginning to sag (see pictures below). Will it be possible to replace the ends without removing the roof, or at the very least only part of the roof? I plan on...

Looking to re-board my loft space

This might sound like a stupid question, but hey ho... The 100mm screws that join the timbers together, should they have a thread all the way to the head, or should they have a section of unthreaded shank just before the head?

Looking to re-board my loft space

I presume that is in response to: In which case I have one question. If I am using 100x47mm edge on and get my 45o angle spot on, will the screw not be exiting the 100x47 to one side as apposed to more centrally? Or is this the idea?

Looking to re-board my loft space

OK, here is the plan. I am going run one layer of the original insulation inbetween the joists, being careful not to bury any cables and then cross batten with 100x47mm lengths at 400mm centres, making sure all joins rest on a joist. These will be fixed with 100mm screws at a 45o angle...
