The British Gas ES1 Thermostat is a real pain. The heating will come on after approx 15 minutes, the stat is intended to save money but just ends up being a pain. My advice is to have it replaced by a competant electrician or heating engineer.

If it's making noise and overheating it's more than likely that your pump has jammed or is running slowly

Will definately be cheaper if you get rid of the hot tank and get a decent condensing combination boiler installed. Vaillant do a very good product, it's more expensive than a lot of others but its well made and shouldn't give many (if any at all) problems

sounds like the schraeder valve on the expansion vessel is leaking. this is the car-tyre like valve, sometimes they don't seat correctly after recharging and leak air causing the pressure to drop, try using a soapy solution on the valve and see if it bubbles.
