    Holly taking over privet

Cut the plants you don't want near to ground level but leave enough stump to repeat the procedure if necessary and immediately apply a tree root killer. It is not harmful for the other plants if they are not in contact with it. After several week the dead stump can be removed.

    £300 million

Weel, maybe it is your bedtime  Perhaps should explain better. The first part was for joinerjohn, who doesn't belive Indians are that good due to his experience with the call centers. The second is for you - yes, Indians are good but not because they are more talented that...

    wbp ply bathroom floor???

I am not a pro, just tiled the whole bathroom. The floorboards were rotten but even if they were not, I would remove them anyway. Then made the new floor from WBP. In this way the difference in the levels is not so big. Finished it with a threshold from B&Q, they and the other sheds sell...

    £300 million

Being a call center operator is very different from being a computer programmer. The call center operators I suspect, don't have to have any degree or expertise in IT, they most likely have a list of questions and things to ask the caller to try. As for the Indian programmers, the talent...

    kitchen extractor fan

Not a specialist in extractor fans but is there a window you can open while cooking? I don't have a fan at all at the moment but don't have dump either by keeping the window open if anything is boiling.

Cast Iron Guttering- replace or paint?

If I were you, I would ask for some more quotations. My whole house (3-bed semi) has been painted for just over £600. This included replacing some broken brackets, fixing the leak and painting the gutter. The prices vary depending on the area but still I suppose you can have it done cheaper.

    Deck over existing raised area

For a similar job we used expanding bolts (some retailers call them expansion bolts). The only difference is we didn't want to hide the retaining wall, it is actually higher than the decking level, we attached the decking to it.

    Ideal Home Show

I went there for the first and only time a couple of years ago. Waste of time and money IMHO. The magazine is also disappointing. I think the self-build magazines are more informative.

    Lighting for under bath

So he can do the work himself without notifying anybody then? Sounds strange that adding a light on the ceiling would require notification, while a light under the bath, i.e. in a potential danger of water leaking over it, is not notifiable :?:

    Tiling training course

He can start with reading the tiling sticky and the archive posts. Then if he starts working in a tiling company, he would have an idea if they are good or not. Unfortunately as some post here show, there are some tilers who do bogus jobs.

Which type of boiler and system for our situation....

Tony, are the customers supposed to agree for a new system to be installed without knowing any specifications? Or perhaps they have to pay to be given a quotation? The OP hasn't asked about DETAILED specifications, he asked whether a combi boiler is a good idea or not and how big the tank...

    Lighting for under bath

part p is not you doing the work and getting an electrician to sign it off. It is either you pay an electrician to do the job and give you a certificate or notifying your LABC in advance, they will charge you for having the pleasure of doing some electrical work in the bathroom (my LABC wanted...

how to remove paint around window that has upvc frames

The heat gun didn't ruin my plastic windows, I am not sure if it's worth using it on the exterior though. Might be easy to sand down. If you insist on using a heat gun, buy a solder pad (something like this http://www.wickes.co.uk/Solder-Pad/invt/421643). It is supposed to protect timber and...

    Bathroom ceiling

Roy, I suspect the OP tried to finish with a whole tile to the ceiling. So he is left now with a gap varying between 12 and 30 mm. Yes, he had to do as you suggest but it is too late now, if my assumption is correct.

    Alcove cupboard and shelves

You are asking too general questions. If you want to learn about woodworking, carpentry, cabinetmaking - your best bet is to go to a good bookshop and look what they have on the shelves. Then buy it cheaper from Amazon :D In many cases though you just need to use common sense and to...
