Yes, tanking is done just before tiling. You can buy wall trims to hide the tiles 'biscuit' although for natural stone tiles and some Porcelain the biscuit is the same colour as the tiles face so not usually a problem if it on display. I tend to find the flat wall trims much more desirable...

It's difficult to say whether it will make the room look bigger, tiles placed on a landscape orientation can add more width to a room, also, your grout colour matching the tile colour can make the room look larger as the walls will appear to be a single uniform colour at an initial glance. As...

Sounds like a job for Suuuuper kerdi! As I understand it, you've plastered over the WP1? This installation sounds far from ideal, the plaster needs tanking, i'd be a little worried if I had WP1 then plaster then more WP1 on top.

Rarely use Hardibacker due to health risks when cutting, the extruded foam boards tend to come in rediculous widths and are hugely expensive, only really use Knauf Aquapanel which is a product that Bal always used to recommend skimming I believe. What's this new product then? A membrane? And...

I wouldn't be able to start tiling a shower or bath without some sort of tanking, if the silicone joint ever goes or water gets beyond the grout on a plasterboarded wall, you are fooked. Might possibly be alright in a lot of cases but not worth the risk, belt and braces approach for me.
