What options for replacing a leaky 3/4" galv stopcock?

Thanks for this info Tim It's on the spindle - where the handle's shank rotates whilst the body of the fitting stays still. It drips once every few minutes. Re-packing sounds like a good option. I suppose what worries me is dismantling it, but then finding that something is damaged and not...

What options for replacing a leaky 3/4" galv stopcock?

I have an imperial 3/4" galvansised steel rising main that is connected to a stopcock. This is all very old and every since we moved in (last year) the stop cock has dripped very slowly. The BG plumber has had a go at tightening it when they've been around to get the boiler on to homecare, but...

my mains water seems to be 27mm pipe?

Now that someone has posted a picture of lead pipe, I realise that my description of a "bulbous" fitting was quite misleading! :? Ok, 3/4" galvanised you say. Sounds good. Another clue to the material that I've just remembered is that last Christmas we went away for a week or so (first...

my mains water seems to be 27mm pipe?

Here you go ... This is the rising main (coming out of the ground, at the edge of our living room) and the (leaky) stop cock attached to it above. The pipe then goes up in to the loft (we're a bungalow) and crosses the property to the kitchen. This one shows a close up of the...

my mains water seems to be 27mm pipe?

It's quite discoloured, but I'd say it's gun metal grey. The pipe comes out the ground vertically by about 5", then has a sort of bulbous bit ending in a nut, and that's where a threaded pipe goes in (the stop cock is connected to this part). So do imperials quote the internal diameter...

my mains water seems to be 27mm pipe?

I have a very old (and leaky) stop cock. I've measured the pipe either side and it's 27mm. I can find replacement parts for 28mm pipe, but I'm not sure about my pipe. It doesn't even seem to be an imperial size (27mm is just over an inch, but is less than 1 1/8th inches).

How to avoid outside tap pipe splitting in frost . . . .

I think that there was a significant amount of water left in the pipe. This froze from the outside going inwards. Because the outside froze first, the remaining water could not go down the pipe as it froze and this led to the pipe splitting. When isolated the feed from the inside and then...

Rising main goes from 22mm to 15mm before the combi boiler

Hello! Just been playing about in the loft and noticed this: Our rising main comes in at 22mm but goes down to 15mm halfway through the loft. It's a direct system. There are some junctions on the main in the loft before it steps down the diameter. One is a 22mm feed to a disused (but not...

How do I manoeuvre joists up to existing rafters?

Thanks everybody! I've decided to nibble off as much length as required to finally be able to get on to the wall plate. Take a look then and decide if the overlap is sufficient. If it's not, then raise the joist up till it meets the rafter and affix with coach bolts.

Fitting an M12 coachbolt - do I drill 12mm hole?

Hi, just about to use some coach bolts to join some timbers. I'm going to use M12 bolts - do I drill 12mm diameter holes for this? Or actually, will I need to drill 13mm diameter? I don't want to drill too big such that the head + nut starts sinking in. But also I don't want to drill too...

How do I manoeuvre joists up to existing rafters?

I think I see what you're getting at WestmidsChippy ... the bit I'm getting lost at is where you say cut the joist 10mm shorter than the span. This is probably caused by my ignorance and unfamiliarity, so sorry about that. The reason why I'm confused is that the joist is going to have to sit...

How do I manoeuvre joists up to existing rafters?

Thanks for these suggestions guys - appreciate the help. And I'm loving your workshop big-all !! Take a look at that long window on the facing wall of my model - there's really no blockwork above it, just the wall plate! And I think that gives me a big problem because there's nothing for...

How do I manoeuvre joists up to existing rafters?

I have a garage that has rafters but no joists. It's been like that forever (well, since before we moved in, anyway). The roof has asbestos tiles covering all of it. I want to add joists to stop roof spread and to provide some storage space - see the picture: it's the red and green that are...

Buying a property with no planning consent or certificates

We had a similar-ish scenario when buying. Our solicitor was saying something about getting an indemnity policy - along the lines of if corrective work is required then the policy pays for this. And getting the sellers to pay for this on our behalf. We never bothered though - we only had an...
