Fitting joists to detached garage - do Building Regs apply?

Wow - thanks! Can you give an explanation as to why there are no applicable regs (just cos I like to read up on stuff, and besides, my wife will need convincing  ) I tried looking on planningportal.gov.uk but can't find anything as specific as this (tends to be either "garage...

Existing loft conversion - now building reg worries!

A friend of mine got his loft converted, just by a builder. Then Building Control knocked on the door and said "I can see a velux window in your loft, what have you done up there?". Turns out he had to correct some of the work and pay a fine! This was basically because the stairs came down...

Fitting joists to detached garage - do Building Regs apply?

We have recently bought a property with a detached garage. Although it has a pitched roof, there are no joists (only rafters). I'm going to fit the joists and then board over them for some loft-type storage space of boxes etc. A friend mentioned that because of the distance of the garage from...

Sealing a worktop to make it heat resistant

    Thanks guys, that's useful info.

Electric hob fitting: heat-resistance on cut worktop?

I posted this first in woodworking, but got no replies - so I tried this forum. I choose this forum because if people have been fitting electrical appliances then they may be familiar with what is required to actually fit them. So no electrical element to this post in the sense of volts etc...

Electric hob fitting: heat-resistance on cut worktop?

Just about to install a bosch electric hob, and the instructions say "seal cut surfaces to make them heat-resistant". This is in relation to a square being cut out of the middle of the worktop. What can I use to seal the exposed chipboard of the worktop? Is there some sort of paint type...

Connecting 10mm^2 to the oven - connectors seem inadequate

No, nothing is specified at all! The only thing the instructions have regarding electrical connection is a diagram consisting of a rectangle we've three boxes within, indicating where Live, Neutral, and Earth get connected. It really is pointless, since the terminals are marked anyway...

Connecting 10mm^2 to the oven - connectors seem inadequate

Thanks for all this feedback guys! Looks like I have grossly over-engineered the cable from the switch to the oven  In my defence, this is the first kitchen I've built and I didn't want to get the oven out of the packaging until needed in case I scratched it. So I was working on...

Connecting 10mm^2 to the oven - connectors seem inadequate

That's very interesting to read about diversity ... not entirely sure I understand what "diversity" is, but it's interesting to see how you relate an applicance's wattage to the cable size that is supplying it. I have only worked on the (naive) assumption that the cable running from the...

Connecting 10mm^2 to the oven - connectors seem inadequate

Yes, a copper crimp lug! That looks like it will fit perfectly!

Connecting 10mm^2 to the oven - connectors seem inadequate

I can't find a rating in the Bosch manuals/tech specs online - I will look at the actual applicance tonight. Yes, you're right - it is a "built under" oven - i.e. just the oven and it goes under the worktop. It's actually a "double oven" - standard 600mm width but with a small top oven/grill...

Connecting 10mm^2 to the oven - connectors seem inadequate

I am just in the process of installing a new Bosch HBN13B251B Avantixx Built Under Double Electric Oven in our kitchen. The electricians added in a cooker switch fed by 10mm^2 from the consumer unit when the house was rewired a few months ago. We have just got around to buying an oven, so...

I found a water tank in the loft (with water)

Cool. I will secure the ball valve and then observe what happens.

I found a water tank in the loft (with water)

Recently moved in to a bungalow that was built in the 30's and has very little done to it in that time. Last night I was having a rummage around the loft and I discovered that the old water tank that I could see from the hatch does indeed have a lot of water in it. I pushed the ball cock...

Tap surround leaking on water butt - how to seal?

I've noticed that the tap leaks on a second hand water butt that I've just connected. The tap valve itself is ok (you can turn it on and off) - it's the seal around the tap that is leaking. It's a plastic water butt with plastic tap. I'm thinking of using a seal or something, but I'm not...

Asbestos in the ceilings - cost of removal? - £4k enough?

Cheers for all the comments. We decided that it would be a good idea to get some inspection done, but before we could arrange any quotations we had electricians in quoting on a rewire. So we asked them about it and how they would cope (they would work around anything they find, such as...

Re-wire required - DIY after going on a course?

Thanks for all the feedback. We went with paying the pros to do it in the end - 4.7k and 2 weeks later the place is completely done. One contractor would've worked along the lines of we do the chasing/fitting/running the cables and he would just do (and therefore just charge for) the actual...

Great feedback and opinion guys. Thanks very much - still digesting some of it, but will post back my thoughts on what you're saying soon.

Re-wire required - DIY after going on a course?

I'm just about to become the new owner of an old property that needs rewiring. I'm thinking it will cost around £2500 to pay someone to do this (it's a 3 bed bungalow). So that got me thinking about doing the "part p" course (can't remember it's proper C&G number right now!) and then doing...
