    repoint or render

Can't really tell the quality. But I would always prefer to buy a normal brick house.. When I see render I always think what are they trying to hide. You can do most of the donkey work yourself and get someone in to repoint..

    Packing a Steel on padstone

Thanks ronny, the mix colour looks like it's prob. strong - but I only took a quick glance. But you can kinda tell pretty quick how much cement has been used. To be honest, the loading is not too great and as such should be fine. I'm just playing devils advocate in understanding what "should be"...

    Packing a Steel on padstone

Sorry just to make things clear. When I say "level" I mean on a vertical plane. i.e. the padstone is a little low. Thus it is needed to raise the steel a little to get it to the correct position. geraint, I do see what your saying, but it's really down to the mix of the mortar... we've all...

    Packing a Steel on padstone

Am I correct in thinking that when placing a structural steel on a padstone, if the level of the steel is not correct (sometimes putting padstones in is awkward) and you need to raise the height (to make steel level) you should use metal shims and NOT mortar and a brick packer. This I base on...

WBP Ply for outter skin of shed

foxhole, I can see what you mean, but I'm wanting to build this thing quick ! However, I do see where your coming from in relation to the thicker material on the inside and the thinner on the outside, which should hopefully not have heavy wear ! Paul.

WBP Ply for outter skin of shed

200mm over hang, drip edges & guttering taking all water away ! When I have a join on the two sheets of ply I also tend to put a run of clear exterior sealant. Also put a slight bevel (15 degs) to the bottom of the sheet of ply, so the water drips off, as opposed to pulls back up to bottom of...

WBP Ply for outter skin of shed

Hi, I am building a shed (4.5m x 3.5m). I am constructing the skin with 12mm WBP ply onto 2x4 Studs with Celotex and then 9mm WBP ply inside, so I can screw loads of things onto the walls. I am aware the external 12mm WBP ply is a little water resistant but not water proof (well the outer...

Install of vaillant ecotec plus 824 in small space

DP, I'd never fit ANYTHING relating to water above ANYTHING electrical. The boiler will be fitted to the left of the consumer unit - as high as the template will allow it to be fitted. Infact, I'll build an additional cupboard around the electrical unit as well as double line the...

Install of vaillant ecotec plus 824 in small space

Hi, Refurbishing a property. Don't really want to put the boiler in the kitchen, but under the stairs (downstairs). Their is enough room for it, however it's also in the same place where the consumer unit is. If required I can box the consumer unit in. As long as we meet all the...

    building regs madness?

Just a thought.... Depending upon how many heads you need to run at any one time - hopefully only one, you only need to have 49l/min for 10 mins. What i did was get a 500l water tank, put it under the floor boards on the ground floor. Thus did not need to involve the water authority. I'd...

Permitted Development and 200mm setting back from eaves

I did a loft conversion (well, whole house) just after the new regulations 2008 came in. I was doing a full width dorm on a traditional mid-terrace at the rear of the property. The house is basically a L shape with the kitchen area on the ground floor and a bathroom above it - at the rear...

    worktop jig?

As long as it's the right size (worktop depth) then go for the cheapest.I've bought a few things from the chippyshop. Just make sure you budget for a decent router cutter :-)

    Makita An504 Nail Gun

Paslode is just fine for close-board fencing and 51mm ringed nails. As previously said, just adjust the depth they shoot into the timber.

    Repointing Tools

All i can say is... Start somewhere where you cannot see the cuts too well and as you get better get closer to where the cuts are visible. Make sure you know how to mix your mortor and re-point. doing this to a poor quality will know value of your house...

    Angle grinder buying advice

It's all in the blade... You can spend more on the blade than the cutter. It's also a good idea to keep the blade cool with water I've done a bit of building and last year I purchased a petrol disc cutter - I don't know how I've coped without it... It's got a hose attachment too... £450...

Breaking up bricks/slab with SDS drill, is that do-able??

spend as long as possible thinking of someone you hate and hit it with sledge hammer. When you do get round to binding with sand, use a hose pipe and whacker... Oh, and when you think your done breaking it up - do it a little more.

    Exteral Rendering

i would not worry about it. BCO's have much more to worry about than diligent people as yourself trying to clean things up and make them look right.
