I'm wanting to remove some graffiti which has been scratched onto a slate plaque the surface of which is pretty smooth. I was thinking of wet and dry used wet. Any other ideas? Thanks Picture to show composition of plaque (slate I presume?)

Nope I just scraped any loose stain off gave them a sand and then restained, using a gloss roller on the flat areas and brush on the fiddly bits. I'm not sure what wood they are, they look like they are more than a few years old though.
