I'm wanting to remove some graffiti which has been scratched onto a slate plaque the surface of which is pretty smooth. I was thinking of wet and dry used wet. Any other ideas?

Thanks

Picture to show composition of plaque (slate I presume?)

Maybe enquire at a stone specialist/website. It's probably more than just a DIY cure.

Roughcaster.

The material looks like slate or black lime stone. I would use a fine
wet and dry keeping the sheet wet But use a cork sanding pad to prevent finger lines appearing from applying to much pressure with your fingers.
try changing the direction for best results.

looking at the damage i would reccomend using three grades working you way to the finest. but do test a small area out of direct view first.

its a pity CHAZ had nothing better to do with their time.

wouldn't wire wool be less likely to scratch the surface?

p.s. I don't like your picture-hosting website.

I have used wire wool on slate before.

Although its going to take a long time... and your fingers will be rubbed bare. :D

Thanks for the replies guys,

I think I'll try the wet and dry, I happen to have a halfords multipack of 240, 600, 800 and 1200 grit paper. Start with the 600 and work to the 1200 you recon?

I presume some slate oil would be good to put on afterwards or is that going to make it too glossy, I'd like to keep the original matt apearance. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220194304008

I've tended to use imageshack as it's handy not having to bother registering, but it is horribly slow so I probably need to not be so lazy and register with one. Any recommendations for a free alternative? Photobucket, flicker?
