    Interior door lining

Hi Guys, I'm re-decorating our living room and need to replace the door lining. I've bought a new softwood door lining kit from wickes which I checked for straightness when I bought it. However, I checked it again last night and all sections of the casing are bowed like a bannana. How do...

hi guys, i've got newly plastered dwarf walls in my conservatory. how many coats of supermatt should i apply before my finish coat of coloured matt emulsion? do i apply 2/3 coats of supermatt(watered down appropriately) and then apply my normal matt emulsion with a further 2/3 coats as...

    painting newly skimmed walls

I just thought of another question guys. I'll be using no-nails/gripfill to attach skirting to the bottom of the walls once finished. When I paint the plaster as described above, should I leave a section at the bottom to remain as bare plaster so the no-nails can stick to it? Or should I...

Can I tile straight onto Floor levelling compound?

Ok if I decide to level it again (using the mira-x stuff as you can build it up to 50mm apparently) do I need to PVA the existing levelling compund beforehand if I apply it straight over the top? The plasterer has made a fair amount of mess on it. What sort of PVA? 5-1 watered down ratio?

    painting newly skimmed walls

Thanks Zampa. Is that the process you'd follow: supermatt mist coat > sand with 120/180 > vinyl matt 2nd coat > sand with 120/180 > vinyl matt 3rd coat (watering down the paint on each coat to get a better finish). What I mean is, you've said I can do it this way, but I'd like to know...

    painting newly skimmed walls

How many coats of the Dulux Supermatt should you apply? As I understand it, the first coat is the mist coat which you thin with water. But should the second coat also be the Supermatt stuff, or normal vinyl matt emulsion coloured paint (perhaps thinned with water also for a better finish)?

    Have I cocked up?

cheers boys. On reflection I reckon I'm just being too fussy and the paint would have covered anything I've looked at. Still, as JohnD says, its a bit of a luxury being a DIYer as you have the time to do it. Thanks again

    Have I cocked up?

Hi, I've just had the dwarf walls and house wall plastered in my new conservatory. It's the first time I've ever had any plastering work done as its our first place, and after looking on here I'm wondering if I've done something wrong. I've been lightly filling any imperfections in the...

Can I tile straight onto Floor levelling compound?

pull it all up and start again? Or go on top of the existing levelling compound? But if I decided not to level it, could I take up the fall with the adhesive if I wanted?

I've had enough of him - he's been a nightmare. Would much rather rectify it myself.

Can I tile straight onto Floor levelling compound?

Hi all, Just had the concrete floor in my conservatory finished, but it has quite a fall on it. The builder has added some floor levelling compund to try and solve it, and it has helped, but not much. Can I build up the tile adhesive to counter the fall...i.e. at one end of the room there...

What is this and can you help?

thanks for the reply guys. With regards to the boiler, we just removed the front face plate. We were hoping there was a Drain Cock near it somewhere but alas there wasn't. The injector tee that you've identified - do you think this could be the cause of the blocked feed? Or is it more...

What is this and can you help?

Hi there, Last week the central heating system starting making a loud screeching and banging noise. We traced it to the GRUNDFOS pump which we removed and replaced yesterday. After we re-opened the isolating valves on either side of the pump, we bled the pump and started the central heating...

window board on top of plasterboard

When using plasterboard to level the window reveals before fitting a window board on top, do you need to seal the underneath of the plasterboard that will be facing the cavity? I've read that you need to seal the bottom face of the windowboard if you were sticking it straight to the brickwork...

DPM is too high - need a solution

Exactly that. In some places the bricks (well, white thermalite blocks) are exactly the same colour below the DPC as they are above, but in others they are darker below and feel colder than those above. Essentially all I want is something that will effectively seal the brickwork to stop...

DPM is too high - need a solution

Well when I say the floor has been lowered, I mean that it isn't going as high as originally planned; we have french doors opening into the conservatory so the floor is at a level that allows this. Oversight by the builder, but I've only just realised and am too far down the road to get him...

DPM is too high - need a solution

Hi there, I've just had a conservatory built but the floor level has had to be lowered slightly. As a consequence, the DPM on the inner wall is about 2" higher than the floor. I'm worried that if I get it plastered, instead of any damp being stopped by the DPM, it'll use the plaster to...
