Why no just put a fly through shelf in .. cut the panel the same width as the gap between the two wall cupboards , then cut it around the chimney . Then continue the cornice through in front of the chimney .. all is then hidden and no need to move the electrics. just a thought Phill

Easiest option is to replace the bridging unit with a shelf level with the top of the units. Cut this shelf aroound the stainless chinmey so that it passes through . replace the cornice and just lay the flex behind the cornice again. Job done.

Savvy .. Good grief. even electric hobs will ruin a plastic splashback. Stainless , glass or tiles are best.. oh yeah and granite. OP stated gas . Gas safe regs would say no!

I agree with Coljack . You need to put additional venting in the kitchen to allow through flow of air within the room to avoid the extractor drawing air from your chimney . Some of the better quality hoods can pull 700 to 800 m3 per hour. Even wood burning or coal fires can produce toxic gasses...
