I had exactly the same problem in my kitchen. I expect that you'll find that the water has travelled some distance under the floor. If you leave it or don't dry it out properly then it'll start to stink and may attract wood lice or other insects attracted to the damp.
The only solution I...
Hi. I have a few questions regarding fixing the under ply for a Karndean floor. I have 9mm exterior ply and a 5kg tub of skimcoat.
I plan to fix the board at 6 inch intervals with 1.5inch ring shank nails. Is this ok?
Should I sink the nails or just hammer the nails flush?
Do I skimcoat...
Thanks for the response guys.
I don't think its a major problem (e.g. penetrating damp) as the rust is confined to one spot just above the window. Its probably just condensation from cool air coming in and meeting steam from the kitchen.
Thanks again.
I have a small problem with rust from the corner beading staining the wall paper. Is there anything that can be painted onto the metal to prevent this?
Thanks.
I'm going to have a go at fitting Karndean in my living room. Can anyone give me any tips regarding the laying and cutting of the strips? I will be laying the tiles onto pva primed 6mm ply.
The normal cutting machines are about £600 which is a tad too expensive for a one off DIY job. Is...
Thanks b-a-s. 'Found while testing' is correct, although I was actaully testing the crimps I'd added.
It looks like it should be a ring to me and it's simply been wired up wrong. The question was really to see if there was any legit reason to have two radials (albeit massively unbalanced)...
Thanks for the quick response.
All the sockets in the house are on a single 30A fuse (wire) with 2 wires (standard 2.5mm T&E). Basically one leg of the 'ring' supplies the whole house, terminating at the fridge. The other leg supplies the freezer!
It just looks like a very obvious...
Is it ever ok to wire up the ring main so that it is not a continuous ring?
I noticed that when I disconnected one of the sockets I was working on recently that only one side was live. I eventually tracked the problem down to the kitchen when I spotted that the freezer was on but the firdge...
Well guys, you've complete lost me there
Reason for the question is that I live in the house that jack built and it seems every time I do a job I find something more to worry me. I've just found out that I don't appear to have continuity in the ring circuit (i.e. only one side live)...
What's the easiest way to check that my earth is actually earthed and that there are no breaks. Do I just apply a voltmeter across the live and earth wires and if reading is approx 240v thats ok?
Thanks
Ah, thanks for that. Looks like I'll be taken em back then :)
While on the subject of crimps (and apologies for hijacking the post - although it is related), is it ok to crimp more than one wire in a single crimp? i.e. 2 in, 2 out.
Are these crimps ok for the job?

They don't have colour coded slots but seem to do a decent job on butt crimps. Wires are held solidly.
thanks for your responses so far.
The access point was my first option but it'll be right in the middle of the walkthrough, not ideal.
Bearing in mind that this is a central heating system I expect the likelihood of freezing to be pretty low anyway so am tempted to go ahead with the...
I'm about to have Karndean fitted throughout the downstairs of our house. Problem is, I have a (combi) central heating system draincock under the floorboards with a pipe that leads outside. This has proved really useful on several occassions but with the new floor access to the draincock will...
I need to fit a sub-pump into a drainage pit I have dug at the end of my drive (not the best option but a long story. In a nutshell .. no alternative!).
At the moment the cable simply comes up out of the inspection chamber and underneath the garage door, where it is simply plugged in via an...
There are restrictions regarding the electrical items e.g. lights and fans. You need to consider ,when lowering your ceiling, which zone your lights will be in.
