    anybody ever used rated people?

I have used Rated trades and have had some good jobs from it .. I have also had rubbish leads where customers have no conception of what is involved in certain jobs and want it done for £50 or so. Having said that even from other forms of advertising there are pitfalls. you still have to put up...

    rated people

I use it . There is good and bad about it.. You very often get numpties posting wanting a weeks work for £100. but there are some good jobs on there, you have to be very picky as to what you decide to quote on . Essentially a good idea but there are pitfalls. However I have had 3 good jobs off...

    Cooker Hood

Hi prentice. We install fly through shelves or tophats as they are sometimes known, on a weekly basis, check out all the magazines and kitchen sites .. the chimney hood with a shelf is the in thing now . It is easier to cut a chipboard shelf around a chimney than to cut a stainles steel...

    Wiring a cooker

Is the cooker dual fuel? ie gas top electric oven . Cos the cable clamp and terminals look too small for 10mm anyways. the label will sometimes list the total including gas burners.. the large gas burners are also sometimes rated in watts.. ie the large wok burner is usually rated around 3kw...

    Cooker Hood

Why no just put a fly through shelf in .. cut the panel the same width as the gap between the two wall cupboards , then cut it around the chimney . Then continue the cornice through in front of the chimney .. all is then hidden and no need to move the electrics. just a thought Phill

Adequate supply for hob and double oven?

Hi Oggy Check the man instructions .. these are usually very specific about hot to connect .. they will usually give you a min size cable required and will state what type of isolation switch to use.. Most 1.5 ovens require min 4mm cable .. combine this with an electric hob again min 4mm. when...

    Kitchen makeover

Easiest option is to replace the bridging unit with a shelf level with the top of the units. Cut this shelf aroound the stainless chinmey so that it passes through . replace the cornice and just lay the flex behind the cornice again. Job done.

electric oven & gas hob install

Hi gnf71 I would say that the gas hob only requires 3 amp fusing for the ignition. You dont say whether the oven is single or double or what the power rating is ( there will be a plate on the back of the oven which will give you total power rating in watts). If the oven is rated higher than...

    Acrylic sheet as Splashback

Savvy .. Good grief. even electric hobs will ruin a plastic splashback. Stainless , glass or tiles are best.. oh yeah and granite. OP stated gas . Gas safe regs would say no!

kitchen fan causing smell from fireplace.

I agree with Coljack . You need to put additional venting in the kitchen to allow through flow of air within the room to avoid the extractor drawing air from your chimney . Some of the better quality hoods can pull 700 to 800 m3 per hour. Even wood burning or coal fires can produce toxic gasses...

    Wall chaser

I have a makita wall chaser , this is an excellent piece of kit. It does however say that it should not be used without a dust extractor as the fine dust will bugger up the machine . I use a Bosch GAS50 vacuum.. superb kit for this machine and leaves no dust to talk about . I have even done...

    Whats your most useful tool??

My apprentice. Voice control works mostly, can carry heavy loads, drills holes in walls, assembles units , fetches other useful tools from van, takes em back when finnished with, and on top of that makes a great cuppa. :D

    Extraxtor fan

I am interested here. Other than not good practice , oh and twisting the wires together ( he does not even mention insulation tape ) Why could you not pick up a neutral from another circuit ( discounting cable sizes and loading here ) because , lets assume there's a consumer unit...

    kitchen installation

Hi elvin I am not 100% sure it is a reg .. but it seems that most manufacturers set their wall units at that level . If you buy an appliance set, ie hob and cheimney , you can then buy a stainless splashback to go behind the hob.. these are nearly always 750 high. As I said in my post .. always...

    kitchen installation

Hi pegtop Distance between underside of units and worktops should now be minimum of 490mm . some manufacturers are slightly higher. this is controlled by regs from gas installations and building regs . Most manufacturers of hobs will state the minimum clearances of cooker hoods above hobs ...

    6mm cable rating??

Shugrover Check the manufacturers instructions as most that I have had fitted specify a minimum cable size to run a double oven ( usually 4mm min ) and I will be corrected if I am wrong but manufacturers instructions supercede regs, so although some argue that a 2.5mm cable will suffice after...
