    TN-S installation not earthed!

From the picture the REC have supplied an earth- therefore they have a duty to maintain it (at their cost). If there is no earth it's the customer's problem. If there is an earth supplied by the REC then it's their problem - end of story.

    House Meter over-reading

you could buy new meter (less than £30) and have it installed after the REC meter- then both meters should give same consumption results, if all is OK, otherwise you will know if you are being overcharged.

    rewire or not

They apply if you put a mains powered smoke detector in an existing flat

    rewire or not

They do on Scotland; with permisson required for most works in flats; maisonettes or houses above 2 floors. see: http://www.sbsa.gov.uk/pdfs/Electrical%20Guidance%20for%20Verifiers%2029Mar06.pdf

    rewire or not

I don't give prices that are reduced for other parties electrical labour or materials. The labour reason- I have wall chasers; grinders; channeling equipment; other power tools I have paid for, so I have already included them in my business costs. These things make plastering easier and reduce...

Electric underfloor heating in a new build

Personally I would go for wet underfloor heating powered by oil, LPG, or electric (you get electric wet boilers), and some of them use a tariff called Economy 10. If you have a wet system it gives you the option of changing the boiler to a different type at a later date. PS as you are in...

    Not seen this before...

Tis probably the REC sub mains going to next door- it will be live so don't touch it. It is the REC property. The other end of the tube will come up adjacent to their meter.

    No Earth Apparantly

Have some news to cheer you up :D Scottish Power is your local network operator (you may buy your leccy from Scottish Gas or whoever, but SP will do your network stuff) I have noticed 2 things 1. There is a Scottish Power label on your cable head- so it's them 2. There is an earth...

    Rewire

As far as a rewire goes, make sure you give all the people quoting the same information. For example I would suggest a MK 5686s (12 way) consumer unit- good with room for expansion. I like GET accessories (sockets etc), and would suggest them as they are reasonably priced and good quality...

    Everyones opinion of Part P

Adam The point I was making is insurance companies require GAS to be carried out to CORGI standards, and electrical work to BS7671, by this I mean any work carried out whilst a customer owns the house, should have a cert- then the buck passes from the customer to the person carrying out the...

Monthly Salary For A Domestic Electrician

I bring around the same as I earned with another firm, but I am not working 65 hours per week for it. Things vary at the start - feast or famine, but after you establish a reputation things kick in and get busy. The benefits are that you are your own boss, you can tell someone to get lost...

    Everyones opinion of Part P

It's a shambles- there is very little emphasis on competency, how can someone from another trade become qualified in 3 days. I couldn't learn to fit a kitchen or do mitre joints properly. The Scottish system of certifiers of construction is a lot more robust- you have to show trade certs and...

    Going rates for Electricians Apprentice

rate is about £3.25 p/h for a 16yr old the standard rate for a 1st year app is about £110 per week. i usually pay slightly less to start- 4 weeks and up it if they show any promise (you have safety footwear etc to buy)

    withheld number - phone wiring

if you dial 1470 before you make a call it will send the caller ID for that one call

    PIR COST

I find a PIR both useful and useless in equal measures. If you are renting a property they are invaluable. To refine my argument- if the wiring is obviously past it I will tell a customer not to bother- better putting the money towards a rewire. What's the point of paying for a bit of...

    room stat

i seem to remember suggesting 2 twin and earths- thus 4 cores + earth, just incase 3 is not enough.

    room stat

run two twin and earths - if the boiler is a volt free type one pair will be mains and one will be volt free control. remember if you fluff it up and the boiler is volt free then you will probably blow the pcb on the boiler, not a popular move if you bite the bullet and get an electrician...

    New House - Electrics opinion?

after looking at the photos, I wouldn't suggest a PIR (what's the point in paying someone to tell you need a rewire; when you almost certainly need one) Depending on where you live (and how easy the house is to rewire) will determine the cost. USE A REGISTERED electrician, as it will make...

    Should we connect to this

if you or your company are enrolled with the NICEIC or ECA then you could ask one of their bods for a defenitife opinion in writing (email them some photos) and they will come down on your side of the opinion. Then if it all goes boobs up- when you don't get paid when the job then you have 2...
