Hello Background -------------- My boiler mechanical timer switch was broken so I replaced it with a new digital model. I have replaced the original "Landis & Staefa RWB2E" with a "Siemens RB29" - The backplate was a like for like replacement - I did not do any rewiring it just...

Single switch wiring to double switch wiring causing issues

Firstly a big thanks to all those that have helped me so far. I have now solved the problem; my porch light switch was incorrectly wired. It was breaking the live feed to the garage light :) One last quetsion. In my first set of pictures on this thread I showed a single light switch...

Begginer question :lockshield seems on wrong end of radiator

Thanks for all the replys.. help Sadly i cannot just swap the heads. The +/- valve has a small plastic ring that the "large" head slips over. The brand is "peggler"..the pair were not expensive £11 inc vat. For now i will leave as is until i come to fit TRV's PS.. Is it worth paying...

Begginer question :lockshield seems on wrong end of radiator

Would i be correct in assuming therefore that my valves are on the wrong way around. I have the lockshield on the what i guess to be the radiator inlet .. I make this assumption as its the pipe that gets hot when the CH is on and all valves are closed stopping the flow

Begginer question :lockshield seems on wrong end of radiator

Hi, I have a really stupid/simple beginner question, I looked in the FAQ but could not see anything that answers my question.. So apologies in advance if this is answered elsewhere. I have just replaced the 2 valves on a radiator. One valve is adjustable +/- (not a TRV) the other is the...

Single switch wiring to double switch wiring causing issues

Have learnt some valuable fault finding lessons here.. Mainly dont assume anything and use a multimeter (if only i understood 1/2 of the functions on it) Thanks to everyone.. you have all been a really helpful - special mention to you Dan.. Your ability to cut through my "chaff" and...

Single switch wiring to double switch wiring causing issues

Just to reiterate/confirm .... You are telling me to imagine a single switch that would have just fed and switched on/off the garage light. For example, if i replaced the double switch with a single switch and just wired up the black/red to the L1 and CN i would have the same problem...

Single switch wiring to double switch wiring causing issues

Had a look at the garage light circuit. To be honest i cannot see much, the cable is cut very short inside the ceiling. The ceiling is entirely plasterboarded so i am unable to see the wiring directly. It seems to be a 5 core cable - I could be mistaken here, it looks like 2 seperate red...

Single switch wiring to double switch wiring causing issues

holmslaw I bought a multimeter and tested the connection rather than relying on the fact that the bulb did not light. I would have tried differing bulbs, but its a screw thread and I had none around. In my meagre defence I did mention that I needed to test the circuit properly using a...

Single switch wiring to double switch wiring causing issues

Update... 1) Using a multimeter i can confirm that the single switch light turns on/off the outside light and the the RHS switch on the double switch turns on/off the outside light appropriately. 1a) The outside light circuit is working as intended - albeit dangerous. I intend to...

Single switch wiring to double switch wiring causing issues

All circuits at CU are on, aside from the "alarm" circuit, which is now dead anyways (wiring removed). The feed to the single switch comes directly out of the CU and I am assuming it is on the lighting ring. I have not removed the CU cover to find out nor have I put a multimeter on the...

Single switch wiring to double switch wiring causing issues

The cable going to the outside light is 2 core and this **will** be replaced. I am particularly concerned that this is not earthed. From the switch, the cable runs directly through the wall to the light mounting plate. I am in the mist of replace this cabling anyways. So.......for...

Single switch wiring to double switch wiring causing issues

I am just looking at the photo of the wiring and maybe I have given false information. Looks like the double switch is LHS -> Garage, RHS ->Outside light, the opposite way to which i annotated. (looking at it from the front) Sorry for the confusion

Single switch wiring to double switch wiring causing issues

I am not disagreeing with any sentiments at all here and i had my doubts about the use of the earth as a live conductor. I have already decided i will be changing the cabling there are more (you haven't seen the rest of the cabling) issues. >> There arent enough cables present to do what...

Single switch wiring to double switch wiring causing issues

Thanks for your response, >> The installation is a dangerous lash up. I don't disagree it is a mess. >>It could never have worked as your description - your missing a wire. My wiring diagram could be incorrect, but the pictures should be correct. It used to work though; what wire...

Single switch wiring to double switch wiring causing issues

Hi, I am having some issues with wiring. A friend replaced a switch in my house with a new one and unfortunately I no longer seem to have a working system. He said it wasn't working but just assumed my bulbs had blown. After replacing the bulbs....I still have no garage or outside lights...
