I've actually got it working! Needed to tighten the spring a bit more. Not w=easy when a Jubilee clip is holding it together. Anyway, it's working a treat. Thanks for your help. If anyway has a spare spring.....!

Are you sure you are not applying pressure to a terminal or wire that is then shorting out on the case or another earthed item? Your multimeter may be OK, the wiring inside the thing may be the issue!
