Damaged main earth cable - advice please!

Hi all. I've just removed an internal brick wall adjacent to my mains fuse, meter, and earth connection. I've now noticed that the main earth cable clearly took a bash - despite being as careful as I could. There is a nick in it, which has gone through the insulation and has broken (at least)...

That's a beast of a cable! I think I'm going to have to have a serious re-think.... I also want to just say a big thank-you to all contributors for their help and advice - much appreciated. Cheers. Rich.

Info about my mains supply cable route - plus other bits...

Funnily enough I'm just outside Halifax! So if Northern Powergrid don't move the meter, do I need to get Scottish Power (my leccy company) to be here on the same day to move the meter??? Odd. I'm trying to do a 'plan b' in my head, but struggling to come up with a viable alternative. Just...

It looks like twin & earth to me. 6mm at a guess, though it could be 10mm. Do I take it that isn't normal? And the old tails are pathetic little things too.

Thanks Westie. So I can reasonably assume that if it is high enough in the air (approx 10ft currently), then it is likely to be ok? I forgot to ask earlier, what is a "sub-main"? Also worth asking... if I were to ask the supply to be moved a few feet internally (instead of taking it...

Overhead, yes - but only about 6'6" from the floor. Earth-wise, I'm not aware of any rod in the ground, so I presume it comes from them. The big yellow sticker on the main fuse referrs to 'protective multiple earthing'.

When you talk about a switchfuse, are you referring to this kind of thing?: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Submain-Switch-Fuse-Unit-80-100amp-Similar-MEM-800KMF-and-Click-DB700-/160696840300 And when you refer to SWA, do you mean for coming through the wall, or are you talking about running SWA...

Their website estimates about £800 ish. Gulp! It isn't something I particularly want to do, but I don't have too many options when the existing setup is in my hallway next to the bathroom.... I've not seen as many of these as you lot will have, but just looking at mine makes me...

The white bit to the left is a window frame. The cable was just underneath a window surround, and carries on just under the surface of the plaster to the main fuse.

Hi all. I've tried to search on this but not got anything useful. I'll try to be brief and get to the point.... Basically, I'm going to be doing some re-jigging of some of my internal walls shortly, and my (very old) mains supply cable, main fuse, electricity meter, and (old again) consumer...

Exterior re-rendering: How to get a decent contractor...?

The house is brick. Age is an interesting one, as it has been messed about with a lot, extension here, extension there, oh - and another extension! Basically, 1950s, but added to a lot in the 1980s / 90s. Proper bodge-it and scarper work as well; some of the internal blockwork makes the sea...

Exterior re-rendering: How to get a decent contractor...?

Partly because I'd been led to believe that it is becoming normal practice to insulate under the render. I can see the attraction - 50mm of kingspan wrapping up the whole house would do a fantastic job at keeping the heat in. But I'm also conscious that it causes a lot of difficulty at window...

Exterior re-rendering: How to get a decent contractor...?

I'm in Halifax, so pretty close! The attraction of coloured / synthetic stuff - for me at any rate - is that it shouldn't need painting, and presumably should be more water resistant...? Do you use any of that kind of stuff, or are you strictly a sand & cement man? I live in a pretty...

Exterior re-rendering: How to get a decent contractor...?

Hi all. The existing (sand & cement) render on my house is in terrible condition and needs re-doing. Ideally I'm wanting to get it done with some kind of coloured synthetic render, possibly complete with external insulation. The house is a small to medium 2 bed detached in West Yorkshire...

Which is the best thermal store? And best boiler to go with?

Hi all. I'm planning a heating overhaul this summer, and plan to replace my old inefficient Baxi backboiler with a solid fuel stove, thermal store, and replacement boiler. (I also have a vague idea to add solar thermal at some point in the future when I get around to making a DIY panel... but...

thermal store temperature low when CH on & limited HW

I've been following this thread with interest as I intend to fit a thermal store at some point this year... I'm no heating engineer, but my practical physics is pretty reasonable. Looking at the pictures you posted, the oxide doesn't look particularly thick, so I'd be surprised if it has a...
