    High Ze - Low Zs

Therefore, in this case, as the earth is the DNO's responsibliity, they must provide a "system" to prevent the voltage on the protective conductors of the property rising to dangerous levels. If the DNO cannot provide PME, then the only alternative is TT, and I would have thought that they would...

    High Ze - Low Zs

It has'nt got off track, I'me saying it should be connected to the MET if the supply is PME. If it's not PME then it should not be connected to a TT rod. Whether it's PME or TT will depend upon what the DNO decide to provide. This is in agreement with Plugwash. I'me also saying that if the...

    High Ze - Low Zs

Seems to me Plugwash is right, the sheath should not be connected to a TT rod. The logic follows that as the sheath is the DNO's, they should either upgrade the supply to PME (if they can), or provide insulation around the exposed sheath so it's no longer exposed?

    Loop impedance is 0.55

Sounds to me as if you were on PME, otherwise you would'nt have had an earth wire from your CU MET to the service head. Then, between them, the two DNO men have decided their earth is not good enough, and so have told you to get your own man in to convert to TT. If the first one left you with...

    Broadband Wiring

I assume you have a ADSL filter plugged into the socket in question, and the BB fails to work from that. If so, transfer the filter to another socket & try it from there. If still no good, run your Browser, go to the address of your modem/router (something like http://##.#.#.###), go to the...

    old looking earth spikes?

Re BT earth rods : -- I thought these were always fitted in pre master socket days, and formed the earth path for whatever lightening protection was fitted. There is a terminal (pin 4) designated for "earth" in the modern Master socket, but these seem to be rarely connected. Some Master...

    freeview TV aerial

Yoe cannot connect a Freeview Receiver to a Sat. dish. You could either connect a Sky box to it, or a Freesat Receiver, see the www.digitalspy forums. You do not have to subscribe to Sky to receive the Free to Air (FTA) transmissions. If you prefer Freeview, first check that you can receive...

    Reliability of oil condensing boilers

I am in a similar position as Gerbil. I expect servicing costs for Condensing Oil boilers will be higher than for conventional ones for a few years. My understanding is that Condensing boilers only work properly (ie efficiently) if the return water temp is low (the lower the better)...

    Consumer unit connections

A remote building full of tools is a prime target for a Burglar; so suggest you might want an Alarm in there. If so, consider running an 8 core cable in the trench (suitably protected) for a remote keypad at the house; also a phone cable? You might also want to be able to switch on (security)...

    WC Pan replacement

I have to replace an old (1965) S trap pan. It's mortared into the top of a (salt glazed?) pipe in a concrete floor. Whats the best way of removing it without breaking the pipe flange?

    Preparing for a re-wire

I always prefer to have the outlets etc higher up; about 400mm above the worksurface, but not "hard up" against the bottom of the wall units. This way, I think the cables from kettles etc "dress" better, the plugs are easier to handle, and if your missus likes tins etc at the back of the w/s...

    shed project with a twist

You must prevent overcharging. The usual way is to use a "shunt" regulator (rather than a "series" one). These basically consist of a power transistor (on a heatsink) shunted across the battery, and a voltage sensing cct. that turns it on when the voltage reaches 13.8. Google for "solar panel...
