Annual heat loss kw vs. likely running costs - oil or gas?

Estimating energy usage is quite a complex procedure as there are many factors. The acceptable methodology in the UK is called SAP. It takes into account the heat loss of the building fabric (and thus the heat transfer using average temperatures), infiltration and air changes, hot water demand...

    floor tiles on floor tiles

The best method would be to rip the lot out down to the joists and repalce with 25mm plywood. That may take some doing. If the existing tiles have been laid well on the quary tiles then removing them and leaving a nice flat surface is going to be very difficult. I know a lot of people tile...

    Sealing bath to tiled wall

To be honest probably the best thing for sealing a bath is a decent sillicone. I suspect in your case it just hasn't been applied very well. Despite silicone sticking to most things, it doesn't stick very well to its self so the first thing to do is to remove all the existing silicone. You...

    Floor Tiling in Bathroom..... HELLLLP

Yes you should. Although it will be tightly screwed down it will still move (hence the need for flexible adhesive). You either have to remove the skirting board or use a quarter inch round trim to hide the gap. I prefer to remove the skirting because it lets me hide my cuts then as well!

Best way to remove old floor tiles?

Top man. Now you have an SDS drill you will wonder how you ever lived without one.

    Floor Tiling in Bathroom..... HELLLLP

You have two options. The first is to rip out the floor boards and replace with 25mm thick WPB plywood. This is the prefered option, especially if you are worried about the height difference of the floors. The other option is to overboard. A single layer of 15mm WPB plywood would normally...

    Cleaning tile grout (Bathroom)

Its this one: http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/tiling-tools+accessories/qep-grout-cleaner-trigger-500ml/invt/0280819/ You need to spray it on, agitated it with a brush and leave for 10 mins or so, then wash off.

    Cleaning tile grout (Bathroom)

Is it mold you are trying to get rid off or discolouration? Don't use bleach, it is just as bad for your health as the mold. Soap and water should be fine. Obviously in this case it isn't. There is a grout cleaner in B & Q which works quite well, they also sell a stiff bristle brush...

    the Bathroom of Doom !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Richard C will be able to answer better than me but I think backerboards are better if you want to minimise the amount of additional height in the floor as you can use a thinner board than ply. I think you have to fix them to the floor with tile adhesive though and using a decent flexible...

    the Bathroom of Doom !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you can it is better to rip out the chipboard and replace with WPB ply - mimium 18mm but may need to be thicker depending on joists etc. If you are going to overboard I don't think 12mm is thick enough. You need to prime the edges and underside fo the ply as well - not the tiling surface...

    PRV Blowing on Air Compressor

Cheers. I have taken the entire switch assembly off and there was an air pipe attached to that so the pressure switch is obviously in there. Replacement is only about £30 so will replace. The regulator on this compressor is rubbish and air appears to be leaking from round it somewhere. It...

VW Polo 2003 Petrol 1198CC Shock absorber spring broken

No need to change the damper unless there is a specific reason to do so. Check it when it off the car, there should be no sign of fluid leaks and when depressing the piston it should move freely and eventually return to the top. It is best to replace both sides but if you are trying to do it...

    Shower cubicle and tiling options

I recently did one in my en-suite. I used Aquapanel cement boards fitted with ceramic screws. I then used Kerdi membrane over the cement boards to make it totally water tight. The Kerdi over cement backboards is probably overkill but it only cost about another £100 in total and wasn't...

    PRV Blowing on Air Compressor

I've finally sorted all the connections out for my compressor - thanks chaps. I've now discovered that my compressor (which I haven't used for a year) has developed a fault. Previously it used the run until the pressure reached a certain level (can't remember what) and then it would shut...

Capping wooden fascia with upvc- good practice?

They wooden baods should be removed. Capping is a bodge. The wooden boards will hold mositure and will rot beneath the upvc is one reason why, there are no doubt many others.

    Shower Extractor Fan

I had a similar problem. It was made much worse by the massive flow rate of water through the shower. Condensation was running down the walls afterwards. I fitted a flow restrictor to the shower and that made a big improvement. As Woody has said you need air flow. If there are no vents...

    Air Compressor Connectors

Thanks John. I think that is the best idea. It is not going to get that much heavy use anyway and because it is the feed hose for the reel it wont ever get pulled or be under any tension. I shall do that. Cheers

    Air Compressor Connectors

Thanks Chaps. Machine Mart, Screwfix all seem to only stock parts with BSP fittings. According to the Interweb the NPT fittings have different thread pitches so I can't just use the same size BSP and hope for the best. Am I missing something? The hose reel is made by Am-Tech and is...
