    Skirting boards for beginners

Mrrusty you have convinced me to take a tube of Geocel with me. The kitchen was built as an extension by the previous owner and it has too many errors and eccentricities to list. A few months ago some of his amateur plumbing burst and flooded the place, requiring replastering. I am likely to...

    Skirting boards for beginners

Thanks mrrusty. The first link doesn't work (the Screwfix site has 16 models of Evolution mitre saw plus refurbs so can't identify your model), but if I do go for one it will likely be your luxury Bosch option, which looks a thing of beauty. But I did some experiments with the mitre box...

    Skirting boards for beginners

Thanks blup, that is a fantastic video! My son had a notion the job could be done in an afternoon but seeing the problems he had to solve with unlevel floors it could take days. I will look at the Makita LS1040.

    Skirting boards for beginners

My son has summoned me to his house to fit skirting boards in his kitchen. He has the boards which he says are about 7cm (just short of 3 inches) tall. They have to be attached either to wood or plaster. None of my DIY books covers skirting boards. I have a saw box for cutting the 45 degree...

    Circuit breaker basics

When I was draining it there did appear to be puddles nowhere near the draining spout.

    Circuit breaker basics

It doesn't remained untripped long enough to do any realistic testing. This morning, after having 2 or 3 days to dry out, I switched it on and it didn't trip. But when I opened the water valve to let it continue with its program it filled for maybe 30 seconds then tripped. After that, even after...

    Circuit breaker basics

I feared as much. Electricity is as terrifying as water

    Circuit breaker basics

....but going back to the initial question, is it normal for the main circuit breaker to trip but the MCBs to remain untripped?

    Circuit breaker basics

The washing machine was bought January 2020 so is about 5 and a half years old. It cost about £850 I think. I have no idea how to go about fitting an updated CU.

    Circuit breaker basics

The washing machine (AEG 8000) has gone rogue. Iţ trips the electrics either immediately or within seconds. I have drained it and left it to dry for a few days but to no avail (except to give me a few more seconds before the trip). It is over 5 years old so replacement is probably better than...

    New lock on decrepit door

My non-DIY son has asked me to make a loose door closeable, but there are some problems. The door leads down to his cellar (and isn't used much). This is a typical Cleckheaton terrace. The cellar is partly open at pavement level so the door opens in the wind. My first thought was a mortice...

    Toilet cistern inlet valve

Thanks Rodders53. I've bought the new valve now but I'll attempt to repair the old one as per your instructions and keep it as a spare.

    Toilet cistern inlet valve

Thanks Terryplumb. I'll get round to educating myself on 'BSP threads'!

    Toilet cistern inlet valve

The toilet is filling very slowly so time to replace the inlet valve. I haven't done this job before so would appreciate confirmation the part I am intending to buy from Screwfix is the right part. Picture 1 shows the current (faulty) bottom-entry inlet valve on the right. Picture 2 is...

    Removing frame round glass

Thanks crank39, punching the nails through sounds less destructive then trying to excavate and pull them up.

    Removing frame round glass

I want to replace the broken pane in a kitchen door and I am having difficulties at the first hurdle. Round the edge of the glass is something like a picture frame (actually two, it's identical on the other side) with 45 degree angles on all four corners. Each of the four sides is held down by...

    Son’s Kitchen #1 Boiler enclosure

I had to google Barry Bucknell! I found a Youtube clip of him (apparently seriously) improving a panelled wooden Victorian door by screwing a piece of hardboard onto it, so I can see the resemblance

    Son’s Kitchen #1 Boiler enclosure

I don't know what the builder was thinking of, putting a permanent enclosure round a boiler that was going to need servicing. But he seemed to have a predilection for boxing things in. He put in a WC upstairs and enclosed the cistern in a plywood cabinet. I was called upon to replace the inlet...

    Son’s Kitchen #1 Boiler enclosure

Madrab is right. It is a Vokera Vision 25C. I have found a spec for it that the site will hopefully let me post. On page 10, section 2.6 Clearances, it lists 12mm for the sides, 150mm for the bottom and 600mm for the front. That last figure would appear to be problematical for the enclosure. If...

    Son’s Kitchen #5 Flooring

Levelling the floor is not so easy. I haven't measured the slope but it is more than tangible just walking across it. It isn't just a matter of filling in undulations. There is probably a drop of a few inches front to back. It is beyond repair. Your phrase 'a complete mess' is accurate.
